Where did it come from?
In 1961, Fredrick, (the father of the present owner) wanted to open an army/navy store in Riverside, NJ. He planned on calling it Fred’s Army/Navy—very creative!
But there was a Fredrick’s Men’s Shop already in the town. Fred’s—Fredrick’s—too confusing. So, and here’s where he DID get creative, he used the back part of his name. Ricky’s Army and Navy was born.
The store was in the town for 25 years. It was THE place to go for school jackets (a thing of the past), sneakers, jeans, work shoes and flannel shirts.
Towns change. Times change. Consumer’s demands change. Riverside didn’t need Ricky’s. It was time for a move.
Phil, Fred’s son and present owner, took the plunge and moved to the highway. Ricky’s has been out on Rt. #130 for over 25 years.
The merchandise is different—no more school jackets, sneakers or flannel shirts. Still lots of high quality work shoes, work jackets and coats, and all sorts of cold weather gear.
What has stayed the same is the family ownership, the commitment to service, and the “stand behind” support of what is sold.
