Riser Animal Hospital

About

Since 1950, Riser Animal Hospital has specialized in providing personalized, quality care for your pets.

Description

Welcome to Riser Animal Hospital, your local veterinarians in Skokie.

Riser Animal Hospital was built and founded in 1950 by Dr. Wayne Riser, DVM, and served as a model for state-of-the-art animal hospitals built later. Dr. Riser was one of the founders of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and had a special interest in hip dysplasia and histopathology. References to his work can still be found in current publications.

Dr. Riser worked as a solo practitioner until Dr. Chuck Olt purchased the practice in the 1960s. Dr. Edna Guibor joined the partnership shortly thereafter. Dr. Thomas Russell replaced Dr. Olt in partnership, and then Dr. Michael Riley replaced Dr. Guibor when she retired. Dr. Russell and Riley operated the practice as a two-doctor practice until Dr. Emil Baukert joined the practice in 1977. Dr. Baukert assumed full ownership from 1998 until selling the practice to Dr. William Sutkay and Dr. Ingrid Baksys in June 2015.

Riser is now a six- doctor practice with a long history of quality small animal medicine and surgery combined with client-oriented service. This can be directly attributed to the staff’s motivation and care towards animals and their caregivers. With this history of commitment to excellence in mind, an award was received from American Animal Hospital Association for 50 years of continuous membership. Riser Animal Hospital has over 60 years of meeting their high standards and hold the highest level of certification.

To be an accredited AAHA member, a hospital must meet the association’s high standards of quality veterinary care. Riser Animal Hospital is regularly evaluated by trained AAHA professionals to ensure that we maintain the standards and provide the best veterinary care possible. AAHA standards of excellence cover the following areas and services in our hospital.

You won't find more competent and knowledgeable veterinarian physicians at this practise. The vet support staff and facilities are world class. We've brought dozens of foster, rescue, and adopted animals here for over 15y getting consistent, compassionate, and cost effective care for our furry friends. Your pet will not receive better care throughout each life stage. Ours actually enjoy visiting because they are spoiled from the moment their paws set their paws inside. Riser is Worth every penny spent.
Outrageous prices! The vet was very pleasant and professional, but there are at least 5 people working admin in pairs here and can barely answer a question. The spay of ONE KITTEN, no other services, OVER $800! I never would have done this here. I won't return.
When you need them the most they are not there for you. My aging Greyhound had an issue on Monday 7 17 2023 in the afternoon. We called Riser to see if we could bring him in for an emergency visit after he injured himself. He is one of their patients. The receptionist said they were short 2 veterinarians and would not be able to see him. We had just been at the facility to pick up his prescriptions earlier that day. Our dog was in extreme distress and in pain as we explained to the Riser employee. They would not see the dog. Our dog had broken his shoulder and had bone cancer and we had to put him down. We had to take him to an emergency petcare facility. Riser is there when they need you not when you need them. Sad statement on the services today.
I've been going to this location for years now for both my dogs, and it's always met with a consistent level of welcomeness, professionalism, and kindness. All the people who work here are great and understanding when it comes to both working with the individual as well as their pet. Thanks for the great assistance!
Riser has been our vet for our last three great danes and over time their expertise has only grown. Overall it has been a better experience for us than Banfield which we used when we had our first two black labs.
Nothing beats that special feeling when you get a call from our former vet, Ingrid Baksys, after having to suddenly put your dog down. Thirty years of previous service from Ingrid still matters and draws tears from all of us. Thank you to Jenny for making Dr. B aware of what had happened. We spent over 30 minutes on the phone with many tears being shed. We started with Dr Russell back in 1988 and switched to Dr Baksys as Dr Russell got ready to retire. Ingrid was our go to vet as we had many Dalmatians, Pit bull and hound rescues and foster fails. Dr B. was the most compassionate vet whenever we had to put a dog down and we usually had to comfort her as much as each other. Dr. B. wasn’t just our vet but part of our family. We worked together hand in paw to work with our rescues, family members and our show dogs. As logistics became an issue during Covid, we made the hard decision to change to a veterinarian closer to home. What other vet calls to check on you after a dog passes that is no longer her patient. Dr. Baksys and Riser go above and beyond. If we could move them closer, we would be in heaven. Dr Baukert and Dr Russell would be very proud of how Dr. Baksys and Dr. Sutkay made the practice better. You are the best! The Brottman Family Mark, Bev, Barbra, Jamie , Jorie, Kylie and Penny Schroeder, Mydge, Oddball, Snoopy, Piza, Lucca, Gigi, Lucky, Dots, Riley, Daisy, Karma, Khloe, and multiple rescue Dalmatians, Bloodhounds and Pit mixes.
My older anxious/aggressive chihuahua mix HATES vet visits of all kinds, but she was sorely in need of some pretty significant dental work. The staff at Riser were kind and compassionate, and didn't make me feel guilty that I hadn't had her treated sooner. 1 I was provided a clear, itemized estimate by email, which was far lower than any other vet's office I contacted a VCA animal hospital wouldn't even provide a quote!. 2 The assistant was incredibly kind Celi, I hope I'm remembering your name correctly, and the vet performing the surgery called me and went through each tooth that was extracted and why, plus read through all the after care instructions with me. The next day, my little Baker girl was like it never happened. I'm so happy we got her all fixed up, and so glad I chose Riser!
I love Riser! Everyone is so nice there and they really since we have changed vets have given our kitties great care. There very patient and answer all our questions. I highly recommend them!
Waited for appointment with a tech when I thought it was with a doctor. Cat has a potential UTI and I was told I need another appointment. What? Came in Tuesday for appointment that was confirmed with two people. Tuesday I was told to come back today. What? And wait for a tech not a doctor
Dr. Sutkay was a pleasure to work with. I brought my two cats in for an oral exam due to genetic dental issues and Dr. Sutkay was quick to answer any questions or concerns I had about my pets or the eventual dental extraction procedure. You can tell Dr. Sutkay genuinely cares about his practice and his patients, he was very informative and had great bedside manners. The oral exam cost $500 total which is pretty standard but the rates for dental extraction are much better at Riser $1,200 max versus VCAs closer to Chicago $1,700-$2,200 Overall, highly reccomend making the trip here if you have the resources. Thanks for an outstanding 5 star experience!
