Located on a what was originally a well traveled Indian trail, later known as the Whiskey Point Road and what is now Grand Avenue, River Forest is located on some of the earliest settled land in Dupage County. The area was originally settled by mostly German Immigrants in the 1830s. It was at this time that Heinrich Wilhelm Boeske a.k.a. William Henry made a claim on the land which is now River Forest Country Club. The land was 140 acres of prairie land and a 22 acre natural stand of hardwood trees, many of which still exist on the property today. The Boeske Summer Kitchen still exists on the property and is said to be one of the oldest existing buildings in DuPage County. It was in November 1926 that River Forest Country Club was organized by a group of people from River Forest and Oak Park, Illinois. The group obtained a lease from the Boeske family and began construction of the golf course began in 1927 and officially opened in June 1928. The next year the clubhouse, designed by E.E. Roberts, was constructed. The 1930's brought financial troubles and the name of the Club was changed to River Forest Golf Club. The Club exercised its option to purchase the land under its lease agreement in 1949. Numerous improvements were made to the course and facilities through the 1960's and 1970's. The late 1980's and the 1990's brought significant improvements to the Club, including a $4 million renovation of the clubhouse, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a new halfway house and many course improvements. Along with the improvements came the renaming of the Club back to the original name, River Forest Country Club. During the 2005 – 2006 seasons, continuing improvements to the golf course have brought even more accolades to our great golf course. In addition, the clubhouse is now complete with a state of the art renovation including the enhancement and addition of formal and informal lounges, restaurants and banquet facilities focused on the family enjoyment of members and their guests.
