River Highlands State Park

Description

River Highlands State Park is a public recreation area located on the west bank of the Connecticut River in the town of Cromwell, Connecticut. The 177acre state park is managed by Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.HistoryThe property sits at a river bend once known as "the blow hole," where whistling winds were said by sailors to speed along their ships. The hole itself, silenced by silting, was last heard sometime in the middle years of the twentieth century. The park's acreage was inherited by the family of Ulia Allegretti, who then sold it to the state in 1995. Using funds from an open space acquisition fund, the State Department of Environmental Protection paid $1,195,000 for the land. The park was opened to the public in 2001.Activities and amenitiesThe park offers hiking trails and scenic river vistas. Trails are also used for mountain biking. It is one of four state parks where boaters can find primitive camping.

First time here I figured I would walk the trail and I found the river it is actually really cool it's not even a long walk to get to the river there are also bike trails where you can mountain bike down the path they have fire pits here and picnic benches. It is an awesome walk if you've never been here I would recommend checking this spot out you will really enjoy it if you're looking to just kick back and relax and have a good time.
I love this park; it’s huge, there are some great trails which are kids friendly and others which more gavel/mountain bikes. Never too busy. Cool views of the River.
Great hiking trails with spectacular views of the Connecticut River. Also possible to walk quite a ways along the riverside beach. Easy place to relax all day and enjoy the good weather.
A very peaceful place to hike and it is never crowded even though the parking looks crowded. There are a lot of different trails and beautiful views. You can overlook the CT River from up high or follow the stream and cross little bridges to go right to the edge of the river. The trails are mostly short, but can easily be combined to make a longer hike. It is perfect year round, but can be very buggy at times.
Good trails. Plenty of water for the pups
Lots of trails to choose from. Really pretty in the fall with tons of crunchy leaves. Picnic table to sit at along river, scenic views of the river, creek side walk etc. Bring your dog, ride your horse or bike. Nice hills to ride or hike up n down.
The parking lot is easy to miss so be sure to keep n eye out. First time we went we drove by three times. Other then that it is a underrated area with great views of the river. There are a few people that bike here. Not all the bridges are great for it an experienced biker I think would have some trouble. Great for walking.
Great hike, not super long but has awesome views
Nice park -- not too big or crowded. Trail marks are confusing. There are some steep hills near the river but overall I woul d say the trails are "easy to moderate" in difficulty.
Nice set of trails along the Connecticut River. Very buggy so make sure you apply bug repellent before hiking!
