The RFC has been developed to introduce fencing to a large and diverse population in the Rochester and surrounding area. One facet of the program is process oriented, in which methods of learning physical skills are taught. The student will also be taught the emotional, physical, and intellectual discipline necessary for reaching different levels of skill and mastery.
A second facet of the program is result oriented. This option is designed to produce competitors at local through Olympic levels.
Competitive Program
The goal of this program is to prepare students to perform at the highest level of which they are capable in local, national, and international competition. Skills which will be taught include:
> Technical footwork
> Substantial repertoire of technical blade skills
> Tactical understanding of fencing
> Ability to construct a bout during competition
> Ability to train and competent with focus and discipline
Recreational Program
These offerings will be held at the RFC, and off-site at community centers, recreation centers, and other appropriate settings. The purpose of this program is to offer:
> A lifetime sport option
> Interaction of both genders and different age groups in a sport setting
> The development of sufficient skill to play the game at a satisfying level
Elementary, Middle, and High School Programs
This program will offer students an opportunity to develop competence in a non-traditional dual sport. The role of the RFC will be to develop a cadre of teachers who will be competent to teach and coach within the schools. RFC can also develop a county-wide competitive league.
Special Needs Programs
Wheelchair fencing is a well-developed national and international program. The structure already exists in which local programs may join.
We would also like to explore the possibility of bringing fencing to Autistic and special needs children. The RFC currently provides the sport to a few children that have been diagnosed as having Autism.
