Rock Island National Cemetery

Description

Rock Island National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery located within Rock Island Arsenal near the city of Rock Island, Illinois. Administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, it encompasses, and as of the end of 2006, had 24,525 interments. The cemetery is also nearing compliance with the National Shrine guidelines, due to its use of college students during the summer to reset and realign stones. When looking from any one stone there should be seven lines visible and all should be straight.HistoryThe cemetery was established in 1863 as a place to inter the remains of American Civil War Union army soldiers. Its initial placement interfered with expansion of the Arsenal's facilities, so it was moved to a location on the northern end of the island. Civil War veterans who were interred in Oakdale Cemetery in Davenport, Iowa, were later disinterred and moved to the National Cemetery. Property transfers from the Arsenal in 1926, 1936, and 1950 increased the cemetery's area. There are plans for further expansion of this cemetery including an addition pavilion, more land, and a wall for cremations near the tank track.A second, 2acre cemetery was established near Rock Island National Cemetery to bury Confederate prisoners of war, nearly two thousand of which would die while in captivity on the island, primarily from the harsh living conditions.

Very nice. Blessed soldiers marines airman buried here. Come pay respects
My Grandfather is buried here, and It couldn't be a more fitting and honorable final resting place. Very well-kept grounds and fascinating museum adjoining to the cemetery. Also very cool there is active Military functions on the island, keep up the amazing work my brothers and sisters.
Normally I love this place. It's beautifully maintained and in general a lovely place. But this last visit was extremely unpleasant. We wanted to visit my mom on the one year anniversary of her death. My niece even took the day off school because it's a long drive for us. My aunt was visiting all the way from Alaska to be with us on that day and wanted to come along. I checked the hours because she needed a visitors pass and they said they close at 4. We got there at 3:30 to find the office CLOSED! with a little sign saying they now close at 3! So obviously my aunt couldn't get her pass and the guards couldn't let us in. We had to turn around and go straight back home. My niece was devastated! Drove an hour there and back, wasted a ton of gas and my niece missed school for nothing. Absolutely furious!!!
NOT THAT I LOVE IT, BUT RATHER IT'S A SAD PLACE TO BE WHEN GOING TO SPEND TIME VISITING A LOVED ONES GRAVE.
My father, WWII veteran was interned here April 4, 2017 the ceremony was quite a moving experience. Thank you to all who participate in the ceremonies and who maintain this national shrine. It truly is a honor for my father and those who served our country.
Well maintained. Many attractions. Picnicking. Playground. Outdoor museum.
I have 6 family members at the Rock island National cemetery. All have say is the people who works, managing and customer service is a COMPLETELY Tribune to the Famalies of the Veterans and Wifes of Veterans who are buried thier. The grounds are being kept in excellent condition year round. Give these people a free pepsi. Sincerly Edwin HILDEBRAND. A Vietnam Veteran.
The cemetary is beautifully maintained, however, the decision to not display flags this year due to Covid was ridiculous. It would have been very easy to maintain social distancing and still get the job done!
My daughter and I went to visit my brothers resting place. The system that they have in locating the spot was easy and the grounds keepers were very helpful. It is a very beautiful place to honor our beloved service men.
You will have to go by the vistor's control center at the Moline entrance. The check-in process is smooth and relatively painless. The cemetery is well maintained and provides a fitting resting place for our warriors.
