Rocky Mount station

Description

Helen P. Gay Rocky Mount Historic Train Station, often shortened to Rocky Mount, is an Amtrak train station in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. It is served by four passenger trains, the Carolinian, Silver Meteor, Silver Star, and Palmetto. The station is located just south of downtown Rocky Mount, and the street address is 101 Hammond Street. In 2010, it was named for Helen P. Gay, a 90-year-old former member of the Rocky Mount City Council who was instrumental in the station's most recent restoration project.HistoryRocky Mount Station was originally built in 1893 by the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. After the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad bought the W&WR, they rebuilt the station between 1911 and 1912, and again in 1916. During the 1960s ACL built a modern structure within the station to store switches and signal equipment before the railroad was merged with the Seaboard Air Line Railroad to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Between 1997 and 2000 the station was restored to its early 20th century design features, with additional ADA-compliant platforms and other amenities. The former REA Express freight house is now the home of the Rocky Mount bus depot, which serves Greyhound and Tar River Transit. Two former ACL cars are on display at the freight house; the "Stainless Whopper Hopper" #500,000, and the 1902-built "Office Car" #303.

Very cool building. I love the architecture. Could use some updating and I can never catch the museum while open. Several old items of interest around the station including an old engine.
Brian was amazing. He called us to let us know the front door would be locked when we arrived and gave us an alternate place to park and check our bags. He was amazing over and the phone and also when we arrived.
It's a good safe station to get on or off at. Train pulled in late, but that is too be expected with Amtrak. It is also a good place to watch and picture trains.
Beautifully restored Amtrak station with free parking. We would choose it again as a stop.
If I could rate a 0 star I would, This was the most disgusting display of professionalism I've ever seen I will never use Amtrak ever again, all but one of the employees were cold, rude, vile, and seemed to have a God complex... I was kicked off of a train before I even got on for simply asking if they had a mask to supply for me so I wouldn't have to dig through my luggage and waste their time. I was abruptly told they won't supply me with a mask and that if I didn't have one, I would have to stay 10 hours away from home with no way of traveling home. I found my mask put it on and was still told I wasn't allowed to get on the train and the conductor proceeded to tell me I'm not riding this train... The ill-mannered conductor's name was* T. Hyman *and I've never been treated so poorly in my life before, I am beyond disgusted and never would recommend this train or station or company to anyone ever in my entire life. Also what's the point of buying insurance for 10 dollars if they charge you 25 regardless to cancel your trip??? I'll be fighting for a full refund and will be sharing this horrific experience everywhere I can.
The ride was good. What I disliked about my trip with Amtrak was their lack of friendliness and service. I was traveling with a 7 month old baby, I told them this when I purchased my ticket. When I got to the train no one offered me a hand of assistance. In fact, they treated me as if I should not be traveling on their precious train with a baby. They would not touch the baby, nor the baby's equipment. As I struggled on the train they looked at me. This was at my departure on Wednesday, April 8,2015 at 11:52 train # 89. Finally, as we traveled to Alexandria, the conductress felt some compassion and helped the baby and me feel more comfortable. On Sunday April 12 at 10:13, I boarded train #80 to return to Rocky Mount, I received the same terrible service for my granddaughter and me. No one ever checked to see if I needed a drink of water. The baby cried for several minutes, no help came. Not that I think you are baby sitters, but I did think that you cared about the people your served. If the problem was that, I needed to pay for the service, then Amtrak needs to state that. If I need to pay for a ticket for the baby, Amtrak needs to state that. But I was truly disappointed in the service, the unfriendly people, and just the lack of help I received from your people.
Train station is beautifully restored. It feels like you have stepped back into the 1940s when you go inside. The station doesn't offer many services, but at least it's clean and not crowded. Trains are rarely on-time, but that is not the station's fault.
They need to have a thermostat in each car. My last trip to pa. I damm near froze to death in June, I mean to the BONE!!! I paid $240.00 dollars for a round trip ticket just to ride in a meat locker, and all they offered was a $60.00 volcher. Why don't they put thermostats in each car??? You should be able to ride in comfort!!
My daughter's train has broken down an hour from Rocky Mount.... 6 hours ago! People are screaming at her barking dog, there is no food and no one wants to drink because there is no bathroom. No one has an answer as to where they are exactly and when they plan on getting the people off the train and into the damn train station. WTH???
Train station that services Amtrak. I enjoyed the architect of the structure. Seating was plentiful but hard and an update I'd over due. Amtrak staff was very kind and helpful bathrooms were clean.
