The Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank’s mission is to fulfill the wishes of eye donors and their families to help another overcome blindness through transplantation and research.
Your age, health or lifestyle shouldn't be a factor in deciding to save lives by becoming an eye, organ and tissue donor. Visit www.corneas.org to join the Colorado/ Wyoming Donor Registries or to find out how to join your state's donor registry.
Besides the recovery and transplantation of donated eye tissues, RMLEB has the following programs:
The Eye Surgery Fund provides local patients needing medically necessary eye surgery with grants toward the costs of surgery. Through this program, the eye bank also negotiates discounts or fee-waivers with surgeons and surgical facilities to match money provided through the fund.
The International Surgery Fund, an endowment-supported fund, reimburses the eye bank for extra costs incurred during the placement of transplant tissue for recipients overseas. In keeping with donors' wishes to help another in need, tissue is placed for transplant abroad when a recipient cannot be found in the United States.
The Public & Professional Relations Department Education Program trains a variety of healthcare professionals. Education programs include information on the protocol of eye tissue donation, organ and tissue donation awareness, and methods of approaching families in a sensitive and caring manner when discussing donation options for their loved one.
The Rocky Mountain Ambassadors for Corneal Transplant (RMACT) members are transplant recipients who volunteer to speak at community events about their transplant experience.
The eye bank also coordinates a follow-up program for eye donors' families, which notifies them concerning their loved ones' recipients, and assists them with grief information.
