Rocky Steps

Description

The 72 stone steps before the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have become known as the "Rocky Steps" as a result of their appearance in the triple-Oscar-winning film Rocky and all of the series' sequels except for Rocky IV, in which the eponymous character runs up the steps to the song "Gonna Fly Now". Tourists often mimic Rocky's famous climb, a metaphor for an underdog or an everyman rising to a challenge. A bronze Rocky statue was briefly situated at the top of the steps for the filming of Rocky III. This statue, now located at the bottom right of the steps, is a popular photo opportunity for visitors. The top of the steps offers a commanding view of Eakins Oval, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and Philadelphia City Hall.In 2006, Rocky creator Sylvester Stallone recounted the genesis of the iconic scene: (while filming the 1976 movie) the film crew, bound by a tight budget, identified the steps one night while searching for filming locations around the city. Stallone first thought Rocky should carry his dog Butkus up the steps, but the big bull mastiff proved too heavy for the scene to work. Still, the view from the top of the stairs inspired him to reshoot the scene without the dog. Also in Rocky Balboa, Rocky lifts his dog Scraps when he reaches the top of the steps. The closing credits of Rocky Balboa shows a montage of dozens of people running up the steps.

What an amazing place with lot people enjoying the day especially on evenings or weekends. The energy at his place is very positive and kids can enjoy the vast wider area. Paid Parking is available. If you are lucky you may get the street parking across the road opposite to the steps but that is very hard to get. Near by always there will be some refreshments carts or vans will be there depending upon hour . When we visited couple of different times we saw ice cream vans were there and there were a small queue always . But that is not a show stopper for your enjoyment isn’t .
Fun place to visit for historical reasons. There will be homeless people offering to take your photos and asking for tips in return. They won’t steal your phone. Nice view of the city from the top as well.
Rocky Balboa steps and the view from the top of the stairs is wonderful. The run to the top of the stairs is not too difficult and it's fun considering most of the tourists doing the same there. Walk around the museum is must to get the wonderful views of the city.Visited onWeekdayWait time30–60 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
The Philadelphia Museum of Art Steps, better known as the Rocky Steps, are the same ones that Sylvester Stallone ran up in the Rocky movies. Visitors can reenact the scenes, experience for themselves what it's like to run or walk up the steps. When you get to the top of the steps, like Rocky did, you can take a view of the city. I have a new appreciation for the Rocky movies. Watching the movies is one thing, but to be at these steps is incredible. Definitely a must-do on the bucket list.
I was at the Philadelphia Art Museum to see the historic Rocky Statue and to walk on the Ricky steps. My first time in Philly and this was undoubtedly the best highlight from my trip. I highly recommend a visit to this famous tourists attraction to all tourists and locals!!!Visited onWeekday
One of the most beautiful museums I’ve been to. Went on a Saturday afternoon and it was not crowded. Spent ~3-4 hours here and had a little coffee break in the lower level. Literally breath taking, have never enjoyed something like this before. I was walking through history in every way possible Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$21–30
A part of movie history! These Steps might be the most famous steps in the world. Get here early if you wanna get your picture taken running up the steps and leaping up in the air like Rocky. It gets busy as heck here. And while you are here go inside the museum and enjoy the great art that they have. I love this part of philly, it is pretty safe and there is a lot to see and do in the area.
WOW!! This place truly is an amazing piece of architecture. I loved the full themed rooms, the quality of items in their galleries. Best $25 I spent in a long time.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$21–30
