Royal Mile

About

Beer, Scotch & British-style pub grub served in a casual space with a homey atmosphere.

Description

On December 12, 2001 local company Full Court Press opened their first (but certainly not last) downtown establishment, The Royal Mile. Described by the Des Moines Register as “Des Moines’ living room”, the Royal Mile has become the “local” for many people in Des Moines.

Cozy up to the fire on a cold autumn day or enjoy our beautiful brick courtyard with friends and family. The Mile has a comfortable atmosphere, great beer selection, and wonderful modern and traditional British dishes. The Mile has 28 ales and lagers on draft, over 120 bottled beers and over 115 single malt Scotches. So raise a pint and a ruckus with your mates at downtown Des Moines’ favorite hangout. And don’t forget the Red Monk upstairs – Central Iowa’s only Belgian bar.

"Downtown’s premier British Pub opened in 2001, the Mile features a menu of favorite English dishes, British beers and an extensive Scotch list. Enjoy a pint of bitter with your bangers and mash! Voted “One of America’s Best Bars” by Esquire Magazine; rated “Exceptional” by Beer Advocate; voted Draft Magazine’s 100 Best Beer Bars; voted by Des Moines as Best Downtown Bar, Best Bar Food and more."

I had fish and chips, and the lady had shepherds pie, and we split poutine. Great atmosphere; very British and fun. Excellent waiters and staff. The poutine is the best I've ever had. My only gripe was the fires with the fish. The poutine fries were much better! Anyways, wonderful time; highly recommended.Food: 4/5
A good interpretation of an English pub abroad. The food was delicious, I had the Guiness beef stew in a bowl and it was so tasty & great portion size. Couldn't really fault anything, we even had Wimbledon onFood: 5/5
The food was pretty good, and the beer was better. The server was a nice kid but had a pace all his own, not suitable to schlepping food and drink. Hit it before a show downtown and got right on. The air was on, and it was in the 50s outside. The wife was not pleased, but found a place where it was not blasting full blast on us. Despite the server and climate control, neither was enough of a detractor to ruin it and will be back.
Went twice in two days. Fish and chips were proper nice, but that Cornish Pasty was fantastic. And the bread pudding absolutely amazed.Food: 5/5
We loved this place. The dog friendly courtyard welcomed friendly dogs. We were traveling through Des Moines from Colorado to Wisconsin and needed a dog friendly restaurant to fill out bellies that day. We were referred to this restaurant by an employee from the El Bait Shop who was NOT DOG FRIENDLY! The food was pretty good. The Reuben Rolls were a little too cheesy, though. The Nicoise salad was the best of all. Oh my, was it amazing! My friend, who is a burger connoisseur loved his burger and fries! Our doggie, Diva was met with a nice bowl of water. We'll be back. This experience really made our day and visit to Des Moines a good one!
This is a review for Royal Mile and the upstairs pub Red Monk. My husband and I rented the entire upstairs for a work party on Saturday, Aug 12. We had a crowd of about 40 people. From booking at the last-minute 2 days in advance all the way to paying the bill, we were so happy and impressed with the entire experience. The owner who worked with us to book the space, Courtney, was very helpful and responsive. And she was so accommodating even with our incredibly last-minute planning of the event. Collin, the bartender who took care of us all night, was the star of the show. He was amazing. So nice, fun, and was somehow able to single-handedly manage our entire crowd on his own. He asked us what music we’d prefer that he play during the party, kept us informed about where our tab stood throughout the night and when we were getting close to our budgeted amount, and slang drinks like a pro for 4 straight hours. He was the MVP of the evening. The minimums for reserving the space we’re very reasonable, and the food and drinks and atmosphere were top-notch. Everyone had a great time. We will definitely reserve their event/party space for future work functions.
Take the plunge for brunch at this charming English pub located in the heart of DSM. It’s a banger! Enjoyed Scotch Egg, classic English Breakfast, and of course a Bloody Mary.
My wife & I had a great experience here. It's definitely an English Pub with that type of food but they also have American Food for the less adventurous. I got Scotch Eggs, Banger Bites, & Shepherd's Pie while my wife got the Turkey Club with steak fries & Mozzarella Sticks. It was all fantastic! Our server was incredibly friendly & very helpful which was appreciated since this was our first time here. They had a great pub atmosphere & also a few TV's scattered around to be able to catch the game. We'll definitely be going back!
I brought my 73 year old mother to the Iowa state fair for her birthday 8/13/49. We skimmed the web and found this place. We both thought EVERYTHING was great. Drinks, service, ambiance... Everything. We got drinks, appetizers and dinners. No pictures of drinks, and the poutine was captured after we tore into it. She got the chicken pot pie, me fish and chips, starters, Reuben egg rolls and poutine. Go there, tip good... Unless your service is less than mine. And support small business! Thanks for reading.
Cool English Pub with pretty decent food and good drinks. Fairly small. Tried to go upstairs to Red Monk for another drink after, but despite saying they were open, they shut it down a few hours early finding that typical of Des Moines. Walked up there and it looked cool. Outdoor seating was cool and pretty open.Food: 4/5
