My Grandmother Eulalia Navarrete moved to Sioux city Iowa from Arlington Texas in the 1960’s. She was widowed at a very young age with eight children. She began cooking Tex-Mex meals and opened a restaurant in the early 1970s sticking to traditional and familiar foods, it started with ground beef, rice, beans, and sauces to keep it not so foreign to the public. It was a different time back then and with some items not being available in the Siouxland area, she had to go to bigger cities to get regular Mexican food items such as jalapeño’s, avocado’s, etc. My grandmother retired in 1980 and my aunt Adella took her place.
I grew up learning how to cook and work in restaurants with my father Rudy Navarette Sr. helping him cater food to local towns. I started my journey grating cheese when I was 8, moving up to dishes when I was 10, and helped run his catering service when I was 16. Around that time I realized I wasn't going to be a pro football player, and I enjoyed restaurant work so I decided then and there what I was going to do for my future.
I noticed how everywhere we went people enjoyed our family recipes so much, so I decided that I want to eventually have a restaurant. I kept learning and in 2003 my aunt Alicia and I started a restaurant in North Sioux City South Dakota. After year my father took her place and in 2005 we moved about a half a mile over the bridge to Riverside in Sioux City, Ia. where my father currently remains operating Rudy Navarrete’s.
I loved being able to help people in Sioux City and hope to keep doing the same here in Sioux Falls. I strive every day to make my grandmother and all who have helped me on the way proud.
