The Sagamore Hills Township Police Department's Community Commitment is to serve and protect its more than 12,000 residents. Currently the community is patrolled twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week. There are always two (2) to four (4) officers or Detectives working in the Township per shift.
Under the leadership of Chief David Hayes, thirteen (13) police officers (two of which are Detectives), and ten (10) dispatchers provide a wide variety of police services. Assisting the Chief of Police with supervisory duties are a Lieutenant and two Sergeants. One Sergeant is in charge of the Investigations Bureau and the other Sergeant has command over the Patrol Division. Beginning in January of 2014 the Police Department will have one full time Detective dedicated to case work investigations. This Detective will work in "plain clothes" and dedicate all time to case work and Investigator meetings within the county.
In 2013, the Communication Center was responsible for dispatching approximately fourteen thousand police, fire and EMS calls.
In May 2006, the Township activated the state-of-the-art 911 Emergency Response System that was the first of its kind in Summit County. The system recognizes the caller's phone number, including cell phone numbers, and through a Global Positioning System, pinpoints the location of the phone being used to make the call. Since portions of the Township are heavily wooded and miles of the Metro Parks' Bike & Hike Trail bisect our community, this feature assists police, fire, and rescue personnel in pinpointing the exact location of someone needing assistance wherever they may be calling from.
Besides patrol and investigative services, the police department provides assistance in a number of other areas such as Resident Vacation Checks, the Police Explorer Program, Juvenile Diversionary Program, Community Policing and free fingerprinting for residents. Officers on all shifts distribute "Patrolled Your Area Cards" which is a highly successful program ensuring residents that officers are patrolling their neighborhoods.
For assistance with child seat installation or inspection, call to set up an appointment with Officer Tim Ellis. Officer Ellis became a certified installer/inspector of child restraint systems in 2011 and will be happy to help you. Most car seat installation/inspections last about an hour.
