Sakatah Lake State Park

Description

Sakatah Lake State Park is an 842acre state park of Minnesota, USA, on a natural widening of the Cannon River near the town of Waterville. The Dakota native to the area called it "Sakatah" which means "singing hills". To honor this native heritage, some of the trails in the park have been given Dakota names. The Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail, which connects Faribault and Mankato, runs through this park.Natural historyThe park sits on a thick moraine deposited during the Wisconsin glaciation, resulting in a rolling and uneven topography. Blocks of ice left behind as the glaciers melted formed the basin in which Sakatah Lake now lies. The park preserves a mixed transitional habitat where the Big Woods (maple, basswood, elm) of central Minnesota blend into the oak barrens of the southern part of the state. During drier eras patches of prairie arose, although they are now succeeding back to hardwood forests. The landscape is further diversified by wetlands and agricultural fields.WildlifeThis park is home to deer, rabbits, squirrels, raccoon, minks, and coyotes. These mammals are commonly seen by visitors. Bird watchers get an opportunity to view songbirds, woodpeckers, various hawks, and various owls in this park.

This park is better than expected. Nice lake area and has a good wooded campground for a smaller park. Very nice big woods scenery throughout. Not much for trails being a smaller park but the ones they have are nice . Has a nice bike path. Park would be exceptional if it had a swim beach and better day use area. Road noise is a constant being small and close to the main highway.
I can't rate how the camp sites are. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The park is pretty simple. Quite a few campsites. A couple trails. The dock wasn't at the fishing pier. The trails are well marked. There was nothing very interesting or special to see or do. If you just want a camp site I'm sure it's fine. I have been to many state parks that offer more interesting terrain and more things to see and do. There are some canoes and kayaks and such you can rent.
Drove down for an overnight at the campground in July. The site was small but nicely shaded and all the trees made it feel very private. Some noise from the highway but nothing too annoying. The campground is expansive and we had a nice walk with the dog to watch the sunset on the water. Such a nice little trip from the twin cities, can't wait to come back to use the bike only camp sites!
Beautiful campground, very shaded, and large sites for almost any size rig. Good hiking trails and easy access to the Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail. This trail is a paved, 39 mile multiple-use trail which has been developed on an abandoned railroad grade.
This place was rich with mushrooms! Trails were pretty wide and groomed. A couple sections got a little confusing where to go to next, but overall pretty happy here. Park Ranger was super friendly and knowledgeable.
Beautiful place to visit with plenty of camping sites for drive-in camping. Lots of tree and plant growth between campsites which offers a decent amount of privacy. Tons of trails to explore and a nice long paved path nearby for biking. The bathroom and showers are decent for a.state park and they do a good job keeping it clean. Cheaper to buy firewood bundles from the park office $5/bundle versus in town where you are charged tax for a total cost of $6.50 or so. Definitely, a nice place for some relaxing close to the city and great for family trips.
Such a beauty! Big woods loop is a maple are, will come back in Fall for that. Trails are not very stroller friendly. The lake was calm and pretty. Trails were not much maintained. There were two big trees fallen to the trail where we had to lift our stroller
Beautiful little park for hiking. The paved trail was nice and wide and had a fair amount of people on it. The natural trails were very nice and not crowded. Saw lots of folks fishing from the pier, from boats, and from kayaks. Would visit again.
Beautiful fall hike and super clean facilities.
Great old growth forest on the lake. Lots of old oaks and big woods including elm. Did the oak tree trail, big woods loop and the sumac trail which were all intertwined with creeks and glacial remains. Then the wahpekute trail along the lake which got narrow along a hill into the lake but was lovely. -hen
