Salt Lake City Cemetery

Description

The Salt Lake City Cemetery is in The Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah. Approximately 120,000 persons are buried in the cemetery. Many religious leaders and politicians, particularly many leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) lie in the cemetery. It encompasses over 250acre and contains 9 miles of roads. It is the largest city-operated cemetery in the United States.HistoryThe first burial occurred on September 27, 1847, when George Wallace buried his child, Mary Wallace. The burial was two months after the Mormon pioneers had settled the Salt Lake Valley. In 1849, George Wallace, Daniel H. Wells, and Joseph Heywood surveyed 20acre at the same site for the area's burial grounds. In 1851, Salt Lake City was incorporated and the 20acre officially became the Salt Lake City Cemetery with George Wallace as its first sexton. The cemetery contains one British Commonwealth war grave, of a Canadian Army soldier of World War I.

This is a big cemetery with lots of history around every corner. Names like Porter Rockwell & many leadership members of the LDS faith are laid to rest here. Everyone is respectful & one employee pointed me toward Ol’ Port’s grave without a hesitation. It’s got a view & my pioneer relatives from Iowa are buried here.
I visited this cemetery after Mt Olivet’s and this was also very large and a great place for a walk. We paid respects at the dedication to the unknown dead. From what I understand, Utah had some Japanese internment camps. I’m glad there is a quiet honoring to them. It is kind of hidden along the back but, it’s still very beautiful. I was also shown a famous Utah grave of Lilly E Gray. Some baby witches had left gifts for her Im assuming because of her strange headstone ingraving. Very happy to see nothing was defaced. This cemetery was so large I did not spend a lot of time here as I had already took a large stroll with my nephew and sis at Mt. Olivet. I look forward to getting to know this one a bit more.
For sure beware of the beast, but there are so many prominent names buried here. Pratt, Phelps, Moyle, Hinckley, McKay, and Clayton. It is located above the city and has spectacular views. It will be busy during Memorial Day, but highly recommend exploring all the monolithic headstones. Maybe one day I will have a huge headstone that just says BRINTON.
One of the most beautiful and peaceful cemeteries I've ever visited. As a warning, this cemetery is built on a hill, so if you're doing the LDS presidents self tour, be prepared for a lot of ups and downs along the terrain.
My 15 year old nephew asked if we could go visit Salt Lake City while I was visiting from California. With the exception of Riverside County's Veterans Cemetery, I have never seen a cemetery this large and well kept. It was very obvious that many of the grave sites are still maintained not only by grounds staff, but by family members generations later. I was so touched by the care taken by the staff and the historical significance of some of those laid to rest here. If you plan to visit, wear a good pair of walking shoes and bring some water. To say the grounds are huge would be an understatement.
A beautifully situated cemetery with great views of the Wasatch Mountains, Salt Lake City, and the University of Utah. This serves as the final resting place for many leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including most of the presidents of the church, as well as many church apostles. A lot of history preserved in the cemetery.
It’s an incredibly historic and beautiful cemetery. It’s a fun place to do a scavenger hunt for the gravestone of the prophets of the LDS church. You have an incredible view of the valley at several spots through the cemetery. It’s just a beautiful and peaceful place to take a stroll on a relaxing afternoon.
Walking through the historical burial sites is wildly interesting and truly tells a story. Seek out some of the interesting stones and you'll likely also discover a large herd of deer that occupy the grounds. I really enjoy walking around here seeking out the stories that abound here.
Beautiful location in the historic avenues of SLC. There's the catholic cemetery adjacent to the public cemetery. Beautiful trees and very well kept. Every grave marker is a history lesson. A peaceful place to contemplate life and recharge for the afternoon.
Hilly, peaceful cemetery with separate plots for LDS, Jewish, and Catholic gravesites. It's also a good place to go for a walk.
