San Carlos Airport (California)

Description

San Carlos Airport is two miles northeast of San Carlos, California, in San Mateo County, California. The FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) classifies San Carlos as a reliever airport for San Francisco International Airport. The airport is off U.S. Route 101. The airport is home to Civil Air Patrol West Bay Composite Squadron 192. Next to the airport is the Hiller Air Museum.HistoryThe San Carlos Flying Field was established during World War I by J. Pauling Edwards on a five-acre field south of Cordilleras Creek. San Carlos' first pilot's certificate was issued on July 10, 1917 to Lieutenant Prince. In 1923, the airfield was taken over by the Cooley family. Charles P. Cooley was the primary flight instructor in San Carlos at the time, after returning from battle. The airport itself was legally operated by Cooley's father, Frank S. Cooley. On July 12, 1940, a fire destroyed the main hangar and twelve aircraft. The family then vacated the property in 1935, closing the airport and the flight school and moving their operations to a new airfield near today's Twin Dolphin Drive in San Carlos. By March 1950, the airfield had a 200 ft by 2100 ft runway and a building for various industries on the airfield. However, the Cooley family soon regarded the airport as being inadequate due to its proximity to the Phelpes Slough and Steinberger Slough and poor ground conditions for a suitable runway. They opened another airfield at the present location of the San Carlos airport. By March 1952, the Cooley family transferred ownership of the airfield to Mr. Francis Michaud, who renamed it San Carlos-Belmont Airport. Many repair and administrative buildings were added along with plans to expand the runway up to 7000 ft in length. In 1957, the airport was renamed as San Mateo Country Airport, Inc. Ownership was also split between Michaud, the Piombo Construction Company and six other parties.

Small airport for government services and chartered flights. Saw it while staying in the Fairfield hotel. Adjacent to Creek this is cute with beautiful surroundings.
A small airport for small airplanes. There is a air plane museum inside but have no chance to visit.
Easy entrance off Hwy 101. Clear sigh which way to turn to which if the aviation businesses located there. Good, safe parking.
Cozy. Hope there's space for all my jets and orbital launch systems. Need to expand biz to edge of universe.
Wonderful people and planes! ATC is nice and friendly. The runway is a bit small so I hope they will extend it and right now they don't have Localizer, but still the best GA airport in the bay area behind Reid hill view.
Friendly and good food Was flying a plane back to east coast and I ate at the restaurant and shopped the pilot store. FOOD was good. Nice waitress. STORE guy in there was very nice gave me a discount for the stuff I bought through in some free gifts on top of it. Thanks
TUNA SALAD sandwich was very good.
This airport is allowing a high frequency of very noisy low flying commercial aircraft flying over our neighborhood dozens of times a day. This started a few years ago and is only getting worse. They, nor the FAA, nor the county supervisors give a damn about how it is impacting the local residents. I feel like I live near an Air Force base.
Great small airport in the heart of the Bay Area. Easy access to The City and Silicon Valley. Staff is helpful and facilities are clean. Pilots should carefully review VFR and IFR approach and departure procedures and visit the county airport website for details so they are not caught off-guard by the complexities of operating under and next to the SFO Bravo airspace.
Good airport with a communication tower. It also has an aviation museum for people that want to see that.
