School of Education at Hofstra University

About

Preparing outstanding educators for 21st century schools, community centers and universities.

Description

Since Hofstra's founding in 1935, studies in education have been considered a cornerstone of the University. Hofstra University's School of Education is dedicated to preparing outstanding professionals to serve in 21st century schools, community centers and universities. As the educational landscape has changed over the decades, the School of Education has not only kept up with the times, but in many instances been the impetus for changes in curriculum, policy and applications of technology. The teacher education and educational leadership programs of the School of Education are fully accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).

Students in the School of Education have access to:
-State-of-the-art facilities, including distance learning and technology classrooms, in the School's main building, Hagedorn Hall.

-The STEM Studio, a teaching and learning lab in Hagedorn Hall, offers a distinctive problem-based curriculum of math and science design challenges customized for grades 3-8. Hofstra students focusing on STEM education have an opportunity to put what they are learning into practice when the children come on regular class visits.

-The Office of Field Placement is responsible for accepting and evaluating requests for field observations, clinical experiences, and student teaching. There is ongoing collaboration with local schools, businesses, and programs to find placements, and provide continuous communication, assessment, and feedback during the process.

-Undergraduate and graduate paid internships in K-12 schools extend and enhance the student teaching experience. Hofstra also offers a number of internships and fellowships designed to inspire students to spend at least part of their careers in communities that are high needs.

-A year-round schedule of seminars and professional development workshops is presented by the Office of Professional Services and the IDEAS Institute. These bring scholars, educators and administrators to campus on a regular basis, to develop new skills and to address issues, standards and challenges facing K-12 and higher education professionals.

-The Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center is a multidisciplinary facility at Hofstra that provides low-cost, cutting-edge therapies to the public and also unique research and training opportunities to students. Among the clinics and institutes that make up the Saltzman Center are the Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute, a New York state licensed early education program for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, and the Reading/Writing Learning Clinic, which is affiliated with the School of Education's Literacy Studies Program. Both provide experiential learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.

-New programs in Educational Technology and doctoral concentration in Higher Education Leadership. Additionally, in 2013 the United States Department of Education awarded the School's Department of Special Education a grant of $1,246,740 to launch an Early Childhood Intervention Specialist Program (HECIS) to train highly-qualified teachers who will serve the needs of pre-school age children (birth to 5 years) with disabilities.

Mission

The faculty of the Hofstra University School of Education are dedicated to the preparation of reflective and knowledgeable professionals who use scholarship to inform their practice. Collectively, we strive toward a more just, open and democratic society as we collaborate with and learn from children, adolescents, and adults in diverse social and cultural settings.

We encourage and support the scholarship and practice of our colleagues and students in their professional lives; our endeavors include research that contributes to the knowledge base for educators. Thus, it is our intent to establish the School of Education as a place which nurtures communication, collaboration, and leadership both at Hofstra and in community settings.
