According to HB 3, college readiness is defined as the level of preparation a student must attain in English language arts and mathematics courses to enroll and succeed, without remediation, in an entry-level general education course for credit in the same content area for a baccalaureate degree or associate degree program [House Bill 3, Section 39.024a].
Today, college readiness also means career readiness. Every high school graduate will not plan to attend a college or university, but the majority of the fastest-growing jobs that require a high school diploma, pay a salary above the poverty line for a family of four, and provide opportunities for career advancement require knowledge and skills comparable to those expected for admissions in colleges and universities (ACT, 2006). We must educate all high school students as if all students plan for post-secondary education because anything less will not give students the foundation that will enable them to learn additional skills as their jobs change or as they change jobs throughout their careers.
