Scorpion (roller coaster)

Description

Scorpion is a steel looping roller coaster located at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay in Tampa, Florida. It opened in 1980 as a part of the newly added Timbuktu section that gave the park a complete circuit, linking the Congo section to the Nairobi section of the park. Scorpion, to this day, remains one of the most popular rides in the Pantopia section. In 2004, before it was Pantopia as a part of the park's Timbuktu renovation, Scorpion was repainted from its original paint scheme of orange track and black supports to red track with blue supports (a paint scheme similar to SheiKra). The ride was designed by Anton Schwarzkopf as one of his Silverarrow model looping coasters. Only three of these exist today, this coaster, Twist n' Shout at Loudoun Castle in Scotland (which has closed as of 2010), and the other is known as "Looping Star" owned by the travelling fair Magic World in Africa.LayoutScorpion has a fairly simple and twisted layout involving a single Vertical Loop as the signature element. After the train is carried 60 feet into the air, riders twist down a drop and pass through the single Vertical Loop element. Following the loop, the train goes through a pretzel turnaround and threads the vertical loop. The train circles around a 900° helix and enters the brake run.RestraintsThis roller coaster's height restriction is only 42 in. (107 cm) because this is one of the only looping roller coasters in the world with a lap bar.

This Schwarzkopf steel coaster was built in 1980 and is the oldest coaster still working in the park. This is definitely a one and done for me but a cool experience for sure. You sit down in the train in the station and see you only have a measly lap bar and then you look over at the loop and wonder if you are going to fall out. Of course physics take over and you are perfectly fine. You do get tossed around a bit on the turns to hold on. Such a unique experience and I appreciate Busch Gardens taking care of this piece of history.
Its a fun short little coaster and definitely a must ride for someone who is trying to get into rollercoasters, but I cant say its the best ride in the park. The wait times are usually always short making it a good quick coaster to get on and off of if you find yourself approaching it, but you are unlikely to try to get on it again on the same day, as it is very simple Overall, its a short, fun, simple classic that is great for newer visitors or returning enthusiasts
Ride is very rough. Some people love it, I personally don’t. I don’t think it is worth a ride especially if you are prone to motion sickness.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Short and simple. One single loop and some sharp turns. Was built in 1980 so it’s awesome to see this antique still moving ! I always ride it when I come to the park, it’s a good time.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNot sure
This coaster was built in 1980. Overall this coaster is smooth for its age. Right after the loop you will experience a tight jerk as the train moves at a high-speed through a rough transition, the break run is a rough stop, and the final stop in the station is abrupt as well. Considering its history, and knowledge of a Schwarzkopf coaster, this one is still really good. The loop is smooth and forceful and the downward helix before the break run is super fun. I try to always get a ride on this one. I hope this coaster becomes an ACE historical landmark and it continues to live on. Being from 1980, the first coaster in Busch Gardens that had a vertical loop, it has significant historical value to the park. Python is gone, but I hope Scorpion sticks around. Wish I had a better picture to share, but not much going on here anyhow.
6/6/23. An old school short but very fun coaster.
Short, rough, and not worth waiting more than five minutes to ride. And have some aspirin handy.
Fun coaster that’s good for those who want to have a good but not too crazy transition to coasters that go upside down.
Really nice cool for kids would totally recommend not the scariest ride and not the worst
The shortest and seemed to be the oldest ride still running. But this was a good amount of track for the tiny space they squeezed it into. It feels very old school. Tight turns, a single loop, and it bangs you around a bit. Sometimes you can't beat a classic. Short wait too, so absolutely worth checking out.
