I am a criminal defense attorney.
To some, that means I am noble and honorable because I do something no one else wants to do.
To others, I represent the world's worst people and therefore must be one of them myself.
To me, it means I wouldn't want to live in a world where I only got a lawyer if my accusers liked me.
I am often asked, how I can defend those people and how I would feel if I got someone off who I knew was guilty? How do I sleep at night?
I can defend those people because they could be anyone of you and if I didn't defend them, there would be nothing to stop the government from accusing you of horrible crimes and taking away your freedom without due process.
If one of my clients gets off, I feel like I did my job well and wonder how the police and prosecutors and government set up to protect us could do such a bad job that some guy like me could foil their plans so easily.
And finally, I sleep just fine, unless an innocent person goes to jail. Then, I can't sleep at all because I feel responsible as an American citizen for the deprivation of that person's liberty.
I hope none of you ever needs me. But if you ever do, I will be there to stand next to you and tell your accusers to prove it; to tell the government it doesn't get to punish you because it failed to follow the rules; to tell the judge all of the good things about you and the sad things that happened to you that brought you before him or her for punishment so that maybe he or she will show you some leniency; to remind the judge that no one is as bad as his worst deed. I will fight for you just as hard as I fight for some child molester or drug dealer or murderer. And I'll do it no matter what your accuser says.
