Good food, good service, beautiful atmosphere and good music. Best dishes were calamari, whiskey oysters, chorizo mussels, and lobster mash.
Service is top notch, ask for Anthony, hes the man. The food, although not bad, seems as if its mostly frozen. If fresh, 5 stars. Hands down. Definitely worth a try.
My two friends and I had missed the ferry back to the city and had the pleasure of being stuck at this bar for about 2 hours. They were out of power too, and still made the experience extremely pleasant. told us to relax, enjoy and to enjoy just hanging out. Also, the bartender who loves metal music made the just about the best drink we've ever had. Highly recommend this place when you're getting into the highlands or leaving!!
I think Scuba rates 3 1/2 stars. Drinks are very good but at $14 each, they can add up. Apps are excellent but both times we visited we ordered burgers rare and they came out well done. Good music and nice vibe makes Scuba a place we’d like to like more. Maybe this fall when the rush dies down they’ll be a bit more consistent.
Great atmosphere, great service. The menu was right up my alley, lots of shellfish, pork and whiskey used in the food. A really well written menu, something close to what I would write. Then the food started to come out. The Whiskey Baked Oysters were ok, but didn't taste of whiskey or much of anything actually. There was some broth, but it was super gritty. My daughter said that the clam chowder was good, I didn't try it. Entree time. I had originally ordered the Scuba and the Beast burger. My son ordered the Pork Belly Sandwich. We ended up switching, but that was my bad, he didn't realize the implications of the pork belly. I enjoyed the food, the belly meat was tender and the skin crispy, pickled veg and guac were all good. The sandwich itself was a bit underwhelming, almost impossible to hold. Poor sandwich construction. It's good that I didn't get the burger. It was ordered Medium Rare. It was a warm breeze away from Medium Well. The lobster was overcooked as well, almost rubbery. Daughter had the clam sandwich. It was preferred calm strips with some tartar sauce. That would fly at Max's, not at a real restaurant. Wife had the Mussels. Those were probably the best entree on our table. The chorizo gave them some decent flavor. The broth was petty good too, thank God they gave us the charred top of a challah roll to soak it up. You'll understand why we skipped dessert. If this menu was executed half as well as it was written, this place would be packed 6 nights a week all Summer. Maybe the unsuspecting tourist crowd will keep them afloat until after Labor Day. I'm interested to see what the new restaurant in this location will be next year.
I bought a home in Highlands a few years ago. I was so happy to see new life and money being put into better quality restaurants in our area. Here's the thing Scuba & The Beast ; when I ask my waitress where the lobster in the lobster roll comes from and she gives me an airhead answer, "I dont know". Then she never asks anyone to get our question answered -- that needs to be corrected in your staff training. We so want you guys to stay around. Food was great. Need the service to catch up.
From the service to the setting to the delicious food, Scuba and the Beast is a wonderful night. They took the best food truck in NJ and expanded the menu to another level. Excited to have a new location that really encapsulates going down the shore.
I really wanted to like this place! It started off OK where my drink was quite tasty and my appetizer was delicious. I had the scallops wrapped in bacon. But dinner was disappointing. I had the filet which was cooked rare as I had asked but the outside was overcooked so as more like Pittsburgh rare which I didn't request. Also the lobster mashed potatoes were so salty they could not be eaten. The service was so-so. Another disturbing thing is they serve foie butter. The manufacturing of foie gras is a disgusting practice and I cannot be a patron of any restaurant that serves this on the menu in any way. I would also like to say that I didn't score this restaurant based on this issue as that is a preference. I scored them just on what I ordered and received. I also do not patronize restaurants that serve veal.
Mixed feelings about this place... We went with a group of 5, the service was pretty slow. The waitstaff was very friendly but not very attentive. The food was good and bad, the lamb came out cold and you can tell they just threw it back on the grille and brought it back out. It was a busy night and it seemed like they couldn't handle the crowd.
Would not recommend, my husband and I went for dinner and drinks on a Saturday night wasn’t too busy. Our food took over an hour when his food came out his short ribs came out they were cold with no flavor. About 20 mins later my burger came out cold as well... the bartender was very nice and apologetic however the food was horrible.
