Second Start is a nonprofit organization that provides specialized academic services to children with learning, social or emotional differences.
Founded in 1974, SECOND START began offering a tutorial and diagnostic clinic to children with severe disabilities.
Beginning in 1976, the Second Start opened Pine Hill School, which delivered school based services to students in grades 1-12. These services provided a multi-disciplinary, academic and therapeutic programs geared toward developmentally disabled and emotionally troubled special needs children. Classes for adults were added in July 1988.
Growing in the early 90's, Second Start began to branch out and provide services to at risk children with special needs education through our Community Development Department.
In 2003 Second Start launched the Newton Learning Center an educational program specifically tailored for the educational advancement of students with Asperger's syndrome symptoms and students on the upper end of the Autism spectrum, also referred to as High-Functioning Autism.
In 2007 after much effective success of Newton Learning Center in San Jose, Second Start founded The Newton Learning Center in Reno, Nevada. Second Start created a remarkably effective program for the Autistic and Aspergers syndrome students in the Reno and Northern Nevada area.
During spring 2011, Second Start/Pine Hill School began offering a Social Perspective Program. This program is designed to help intellectually challenged students implement Social Skills and Behavior Management in a safe, supportive and fun environment.
