The bedside staff here are extremely caring and trying their best to provide excellent service. However, you should be aware that staffing ratios are extremely unsafe. By their nature, patients who are admitted to this hospital are extremely ill and very vulnerable, requiring high levels of services. Despite this, they often have 5 patients to 1 nurse, even if half of those patients are on ventilators. They often have 8+ patients to 1 CNA, even if none of those patients can go to the bathroom by themselves. And the respiratory therapists are lucky if they only have 8 ventilated patients each. Physicians often work up to two weeks of 12-hour shifts with no days off I saw one doc work an entire month once! These ratios are clearly unsafe and poor staff:patient ratios have been proven to result in accidents and injuries by many studies. However, since there is no federal or Wisconsin state law that sets minimum staffing ratios, the large parent company of Select Specialties cannot be legally forced to increase their staffing levels. That’s the glory of for-profit medicine! I’ve interacted with at least four different Select hospitals in two different states during my 15 years as paramedic and a nurse, and they all exhibit the same callous disregard for safe staff:patient ratios. My advice? Get your care at a hospital with a union. That way if the staff is being forced to work under unsafe conditions, they can go on strike and make sure everyone knows about. At Select, they’ll just keep on talking about their “commitment to quality care!” while continuing to staff at a bare-bones level and blaming every single outside thing they possibly can, instead of taking responsibility for their own choices. And since Select views poor social media reviews as a “quality incident” I’m sure some poor sucker in HR will be responding to this with some sappy nonsense about how concerned they are to hear it, blah blah blah. I won’t be responding. If you are a patient or have a loved one here, you can figure out how devoted to change they are simply by asking each staff member who comes into the room how many patients they have. Then decide for yourself if that’s acceptable.
I was admitted to Select on November 17, 2020 and I was there until roughly June 10 2022. During my rough stay the staff was amazing and became like a second family. They were there helping me through everything even my anxiety and depression. I think the staff appreciated me as much as I did them. Thanks to the director Dr. Croft I was able to get the best ENT in the state to work on my case.
Do not send your loved ones here. Place was an absolute joke. We liked the nurses, but the doctors and rest of the staff were not good. We felt it impeded our dads progress more than anything. Were told some of his health issues were resolved when they were not. Kept pushing us to sign a DNR when that was not in our wishes as we stated multiple times. If a patient shows little progress they give up. Thankfully we got him transferred closer to home to a new facility we love.
I was admitted to Select Hospital in Madison back in November to continue my recovery from COVID pneumonia. The staff here is amazing!! God used them to help me in my recovery. They became my family as they cared for me 24/7. They put in long hours and picked up extra shifts over the holidays and were always upbeat and encouraging to me! I started in the ICU, then moved down the hall on 4th floor, then down to 3rd floor and eventually to another REHAB hospital. With their excellent care I kept moving closer to the exit!! I would highly recommend to anyone that this place will go above and beyond to help you heal!
I was admitted to Select Specialty Hospital in November 2021 after 2 months in ICU with severe COVID complications and they took excellent care of me. From the large variety of food they served to the nursing staff and doctors they were extremely responsive to my needs. Doctors visited me everyday and nurses arrived within a few minutes when I needed assistance. I was amazed - I could barely move when I first arrived and I was in very rough shape, but after 3 weeks they helped me heal and had me walking. 24 hours a day they made sure I was well taken care of. Special mention to Jorge Nurse, Dave & Mark Respiratory Techs, Jodie & Karli CNA's, Sam Patient Advocate, the PT and OT personnel, and Dr. Croft who went above and beyond to support my recovery. Honestly, the entire staff was great & pleasant - I wish I could remember more of the names. Thanks for taking great care of me and getting me home as quick as possible!
Looks like nothing has changed. Was here after an ICU stay almost three years ago and waiting for a call light to be answered was a huge problem then too. People tell you they will "be right back" but its at least a half an hour if at all. Staff is so hit or miss. Had some wonderful caregivers and some not so nice ones. The kitchen staff was amazing as was physical and occupational therapy. Unfortunately they threw out all of my flowers from the previous hospital including the cards and glass vase. They said it would be kept at the nurses station but no one knew what happened to it. They also sedate you around the clock. I was given sleep meds at 7pm until someone caught that and stopped it. They also told me I needed to keep an unused feeding tube in for three months after first insertion. They sent me home with a bad stomach flu so I was back in local hospital three days later. They were curious why I still had a feeding tube and scheduled an immediate removal. Thank goodness for that as it was painful and had oozing pus before they even released me! The elderly janitor was the best part of this place. He came every day and was so sweet. Overall it's just hit or miss I think, although I don't think that's unusual for Wisconsin healthcare.
I came to Select Specialty in mid-May and am just now leaving at the end of August. The physical and occupational therapy staff has been top notch. They worked me through all kinds of anxiety I had over getting up and moving with a tracheostomy, using kindness and humor. They consistently pushed me just a little farther than I thought I could go, so to speak, while also making me feel secure and not making me feel bad when I couldn’t continue with something. They also advocated for me in areas other than therapy, all the time. I came in barely able to sit up and I am leaving able to walk with a walker, use the bathroom unaided, and participate fully in my own self care. My mobility has improved beyond what it was before I was hospitalized. The respiratory therapy staff is also incredibly skilled and personable. The talked me through a lot of long nights on a ventilator and scary moments as I adjusted to life with a tracheostomy and have helped me enormously reduce my dependency on oxygen. The nursing staff also includes many excellent nurses who made my stay a positive experience. I had several really great CNAs—they were overall very friendly and fun as well as skilled and professional. My caseworker probably came close to quitting and walking out after dealing with the various other institutions that were involved in my case and my insurance company, but she didn’t. Luckily, she stuck it out and fought hard to find good resolutions and find me an appropriate placement for further therapy, I would definitely recommend Select Specialty Madison. I am happy to be making progress but sad to be leaving a place where I have had so much success and felt safe and well-cared for.
Upon arriving after having a total knee removal with my leg being totally infected, immediately the staff showed total professionalism, compassion, and love for their patients. I felt safe knowing that Selects staff would be with me throughout my journey. If a staff member did not feel comfortable working with me due to my condition, their was someone right around the corner that was comfortable. Physical therapy and the nursing staff were very enjoyable and pushed me everyday to work hard and get back to my old self. Because of them, I am now able to have my next surgery. I would highly recommend this facility to everyone.
my wife was a patient recovering from a stroke aug -sept 2021. While some staff was ok but more were unacceptable they were very slow to answer call lights and when they did they seemed like we were bothering them. while here she was unable to keep any food down they treated the nausea but nobody seemed to want to try to find the problem. After leaving we received over $6000 in bills that insurance cant cover because the providers are out of our network it seems to me the hospital should have known this and informed us before letting them provide services.to the few who answered call lights and gave prompt and friendly service i wish to say thank you the rest of the staff could take a lesson from you. Overall not a good experience would not refer anyone to use this facility
I cannot express my appreciation and gratitude for this facility and the compassionate care my Uncle received during his lengthy medical ordeal. The staff treated him with the level of comfort and professionalism needed to finally give him the chance to heal properly. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone who expects a high level of care for themselves or loved ones.
