Shakamak State Park

Description

Shakamak State Park is a state park in Indiana, United States. It is located 30mi southeast of Terre Haute, Indiana.Shakamak's main attraction is its excellent fishing. Shakamak has several outdoor recreational activities such as swimming, hiking, paddle boating, row boating, camping, fishing. The park offers rentals for cabins and campsites and is located just 3mi from Jasonville, IndianaHistoryShakamak State Park was dedicated on September 3, 1928.The land was donated for a state park from the counties of Clay, Greene and Sullivan. The name "Shakamak" was chosen by the park's founders. The word is said to mean "river of the long fish" in the language of either the Delaware (Lenape) or Kickapoo Indians, and was said to be used by them to describe the nearby Eel River. The park founders simply adopted the name for the park long after any Delaware departed the area—well over 100 years before in 1819.The first lake of Shakamak Park was created by the stopping up of a 5ft sewer and additional lakes were added in following years (30 years later in the case of Lake Kickapoo). There were no lakes in the area prior to that time. It was purposely stocked with bass by Richard Lieber in May 1930, starting the park's fame for fishing in July 1932 after sufficient time had passed for the original bass to reproduce enough to populate the lake. Further development of the park also occurred with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). CCC Company 522 was located in the park from 1933 until 1942.

Those of us closer to Indy don’t hear about Shakamak as much since it’s farther away but we’re missing out. It looks like a great place to take a family. They have cabins and a large pool area. I came here for a hike. Trail 1 is great. Great Lake views and some of the best aquatic plant life I’ve seen in Indiana. They keep the trail in great shape although there are a few areas that need maintenance. I saw many people fishing as well.
Boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, picnic shelters, cabins and camp sites for overnights, even some CCC and US Olympic Diving Team history...this park has it all. We arrived in early Fall so the pool was closed but we were able to rent a paddle boat so we could see the woods from the water's surface. Hints of autumn color, a fresh breeze and a little exercise paddling around Lake Shakamak, what a great afternoon. Staff was pleasant, helpful and available. Pit toilets looked brand new and were clean as clean as a pit toilet can be that is, quickly Go then go quickly is a good rule. And the name, Shakamak...just rolls off your tongue! Keep it up Indiana, some wonderful State Parks here.
Had a bit of family time together. Saw some wildlife and enjoyed the sunrise from the screened in porch of our cabin. Very happy we had AC in our cabin. Had a bit of stink bug problem while there but was informed it happens talking 100s inside/outside cabin. Loved fishing from the dock and caught/released a ton of fish. Next time we will bring out paddle boards. Large lakes. Pool wasn't open. I'm sure it gets very busy during the summer.
I love this State Park pool. It is worth buying a STATE PARK PASS if your going to visit STATE Parks. 50 dollars for the year. This pool has a slide lots of hiking paths.
As a Hoosier I grew up with this state park, but it wasn't until I took my hobby of photography to a new level did I truly appreciate this park. It's trails are well defined and easy to navigate. There are several lakes for those who want to fish and or sit and just enjoy the natural environment around you. This state park will not disappoint.
If you like fishing, moderate to easy hiking trails. This place is awesome. Camp sites are large gravel pads on most. Installing new modem pit toilets in the remote areas. They also had share a book boxes around the campground, grandson loved that.
Love the huge sites at Shakamak! I am used to parks with barely room to open awning or slide out on camper. At Shakamak, there was plenty of room!
One of my favorite Indiana State parks! Very nice facilities. The campground has large semi private sites and seem easy to get into. The lakes are nice to paddle on. There are nice roads to ride bikes on and the pool looks amazing! Several trails are available to hike on. The family cabins look nice.
Beautiful park in the fall. Nice newer restrooms and facilities. We will definitely be back because we want to get the chance to experience what the lakes have to offer. Since people always ask about cell signal, not so much. At least the Verizon network. Phones and messaging worked great. Internet was spotty at best
Beautiful area Closed for season-did not get to experience the pool, Nature Center, etc.
