SHAOLIN KEMPO KARATE
Shaolin Kempo Karate is a system of self defense combining the three arts of Shaolin Kung Fu, Karate, and Jiu Jitsu. This combination has been labeled by some as the most
effective martial art today.
Below is a breakdown of what each system has to offer in terms of martial ability, body and spiritual development.
KARATE
Karate is a system of self defense that originated in Okinawa. Like other arts of its time, it has a strong focus on high kicks, linear strikes, external power and body conditioning. Most of its focus in terms of self defense is the idea of finishing the assault with one blow. To make this possible, the Karate student has to endure long hours of training
and dedication.
SHAOLIN KUNG FU
Shaolin Kung Fu is one of the oldest forms of martial arts and where all other forms branch off from. Originally developed in China, it was designed for internal and external exercise to help better the health and minds of the Buddhist Monks. Kung Fu uses a lot of quick hand movements and circular strikes. It focuses on defense with the hands, low kicks, and relies on internal energy instead of brute force. Kung Fu has slowly evolved over the centuries into a system of self defense based on the everyday movements of animals and how they survived in each of their environments. The animals bring a variety of movements, not only to enhance defensive skills, but develop health and flexibility as well. This system of self defense makes it easier for those who find it difficult to utilize high kicks and want to focus on the healing effect of the martial arts.
The original five animals are the Tiger, Snake, Crane, Dragon, and Leopard:
Tiger
The Tiger represents courage, tenacity and power. Physically, it is the strongest of all the five animals. The movements of the Tiger develop strong bones and a strong back.
Dragon
The Dragon represents fighting spirit & wisdom. From the Dragon we learn to "ride the wind", meaning the Dragon is especially noted for its flexibility; it uses simple, basic
techniques with a challenging strategy of movement complementary to the opponent's (ie. when he advances, I retreat; when he retreats, I advance). The Dragon helps develop inner strength.
Leopard
The Leopard represents speed and agility. The Leopard trains you for muscle strength. The Leopard's power is primarily produced from a loose, relaxed, whip-like action generated by speed and balance as well as limber waist and hips movements. The Leopard employs many crushing techniques and a lot of internal strikes with the hands. It gets in close to do it's damage.
Crane
The Crane represents balance and gracefulness. Crane prefers to work at a distance from the opponent and at angles off-line from his attacks. With calm, quiet nature, it's movements are soft, relaxed and circular. However, they are explosive and can be used in close proximity or at a distance. The Crane has excellent balance and is very good at disturbing the balance of others.
Snake
The Snake is noticed for its suppleness and rhythmic endurance. The Snake is cunning and deceptive in its fighting method, it can coil, zigzag and use rapid twisting motion to compensate for its lack of limbs. The Snake goes for vulnerable points, the eyes and
throat being common targets
JIU JITSU
Jiu Jitsu, translated as "gentle art", was developed in Japan and consists of wrist and joint lock manipulation, pressure point striking, and body throws. This system of self defense gives the weaker opponent the ability to overcome the bigger, more stronger opponent with out the need of superior strength. It was designed to take the opponents own strength and to use it against them. This allows one to defend them self without the need to punch or kick the opponent, and defend without inflicting permanent damage. This is what makes Jiu-Jitsu essential for a well rounded martial artist or someone simply interested in
self-defense.
