Dr. Story, the new owner of this clinic, has been my vet for the past ten plus years. He is one of the most personable and professional vets I have ever known. Always treated my pets like they were his own. We will miss him very much! Decatur's loss is Tuscaloosa's gain! Best of luck and many blessings on this new chapter.
Dr shaver is the best vet. He is caring and always makes you comfortable about what's happening with your pet. James is great and so are the girls up front. I have been going there for 11 years and I wouldn't go anywhere else.
Treated rudely by staff. Doctor was confrontational and rude about the diet I feed my dogs. We feed them whole foods - chicken, beef, vegetables, potatoes, rice, etc. All very healthy foods. In fact, I get compliments on the shiny coats and general health of my dogs constantly. We have cured some of their allergy issues by feeding them this diet. I give them vitamins supplements, fish oil, and healthy treats. This doctor prescribed some sort of overpriced Hills Diet crap from a can for my young Beagle. I will never go back there.
It was great at first. However, some days I would go the staff would seem a little frazzled, other times they were great and took great care of my pet. The prices are very reasonable, but at times I felt that I needed a second opinion because my dog was misdiagnosed several times there and as a result he received an injury that required more treatment.
I took my 8 month old male dog Cooper-- purebred pug in on March 28, 2013 to be fixed. He had an undescended testicle that required a more complicated procedure, similar to a spay. The procedure was performed that day, and I called that afternoon to follow-up. I was told by staff that it was more difficult than anticipated and Dr. Shaver had to come in during Dr. Hinton's procedure to oversee, but Cooper was fine and I could pick him up the next day. I even spoke with Dr. Hinton who assured me Cooper was okay. On Friday, March 29, I picked Cooper up. As soon as he was brought out he didn't seem like himself. I was told by staff that it was due to the procedure and then I was given medication for his pain. I was also told that he had recently eaten, peed, and given a dose of his pain meds, and he could not receive a re-dose until that evening. We came home and Cooper was clearly miserable. He wouldn't eat or drink, he wouldn't move, he wouldn't let us touch him. After several hours we also noticed he wouldn't urinate. I gave him pain medication early, tried favorite foods and toys, etc but nothing. At this point Shaver's office has closed so we took Cooper to the emergency vet. The emergency vet felt his belly and immediately said something was wrong. All tests indicated that his kidneys had completely shut down. There was also blood in his abdomen. He was hooked up to an IV, and we drove to MSU's clinic as it was the closed 24 hr clinic with an ultrasound. At MSU they found that Cooper's bladder had burst several hours before. They were able to make him comfortable as more tests were done. The vets found that Cooper's urethra and prostate had been removed instead of his testicle. They were no good options to save him-- we had to put him down the morning of March 30, 2013. Their results were confirmed by a necropsy. Drs. Hinton and Shaver were negligent and killed my dog. Their staff lied to me and was not forthcoming with information. My dog suffered unnecessarily for days because they could never admit what they did. Even during their apology Dr. Shaver defended the mistake saying it was an easy one to make. The vets of Shaver Animal Hospital obviously either lack skills or judgement and should not be entrusted to care for your animal.
Dr. Shaver operated on my dog RJ and removed 2 Tumors. RJ has received excellent care and the staff was great. I would recommend them to other pet owners without hesitation.
