Our room was 810. The room was filthy, all surfaces had not even been cleaned. The small refrigerator was leaking water from the huge ice block that had filled the freezer. Not knowing this we put food in the fridge only to find out that the freezer was leaking on our food. We had to throw that food away. In the bedroom I spotted something disturbing on the baseboard between the wall and one of the beds. When the maintenance man came to remove the refrigerator to "take it down and rinse it out" I asked him to look at what was on the baseboard by the bed. OMG, he reached down to pick it up and had to pulled it from the baseboard. It was a huge gross hairball which he promptly flushed down the toilet. We packed up and checked out. At the front desk they asked why we were leaving and when I told them what we found I was told we can give you another room. At this point we were are so grossed out that the offer was out of the question. While the filthy condition of the rooms was as bad as it gets we had serious concerns about the structural condition of the building. Upon walking into the space the floor slanted dramatically to the left. Every room had a rolling feel with every step. So much nerve to charge $250. per night!
Stayed here for a family vacation and the service and the location was great but the rooms are filthy!! We were sneezing a lot while we were there and couldn’t figure out why. Well we check one of the closets and it had an inch thick of dust on the air filter. There was dust everywhere. It’s like they haven’t cleaned the rooms in years. They really need to better because that is not healthy at all. Other than that which is pretty huge the people are friendly and location is amazing.
Hotel is in great spot on white-sand, wide Atlantic beach. Staff is very friendly and courteous and helpful. Indoor and outdoor pool. Rooms are all great, ocean-facing suites with kitchenette and living area and balcony. Two connected bathrooms! Facility is dated and rooms vary in maintenance because they are individually owned and served by the hotel management. Our shower curtain was held up by a cheap compression curtain rod, a bit rusty. A door hanger had broken off and was stored in a drawer. There is no cleaning service- you have to call for towels and soap every day, as you need it. Put used towels and garbage outside the room, to be picked up. Staff is happy to provide all the coffee, filters, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper you could want, but no tissues provided. Fitness center is an after-thought, with old creaky matrix elliptical, no treadmill, and a bike that can be pedal led, but without any electrical controls functioning. Good crossover cable provided. Good, free, covered parking garage.
Location and view was great. But probably the dirtiest resort that I ever stayed at. I don’t think they even bothered vacuuming the place after a few other guest stays. The pull out couch beds still has sheets from what seemed to be several other stays. And the mattresses were disgusting. Also, the entire resort was in dire need of maintenance and remodeling. The place was not kept up to date. In addition, although the views were great, there always seemed to be someone smoking. The smell would waft to our balcony at all hours. I don’t think they did a good job monitoring. In addition, the thermostat was stuck on 69 degrees. So we had to resort to just turning it off when it got too cold. I have two stars instead of one because for the most part, the staff was pretty friendly. And again the location and the views were wonderful. But I would not recommend to anyone who is a stickler for cleanliness.
The only thing worthwhile is the proximity to the beach and ocean view. Otherwise it’s the equivalent of a trailer campsite. The rooms are dated and dirty. The amenities nonexistent bring your own soap, shampoo, Kleenex. Beds are like concrete, pillows are useless, and bedding/sheets were inadequate. The idea of a shower is to get clean, but not with that funky smelling water. Bathrooms were plain filthy. Be sure to wear slides at all times. The furniture was clearly excessively used, stained, and who knows what still on it. The restaurant and bar? Roadside stands offer better food, beverages, and servers. We had four people, four rooms, and the same exact opinions after checking out. The grossest hotel we’d been to for business travel in two years and couldn’t wait to get home and shower. In short, if all you need is shelter, a place to store personals, and just want to go to the beach, it’s perfect. But to call it a “resort” is really far fetched. Set your expectations low on this one.
It was a great location, although for the room price - not what I expected, beds were full & placed tightly in 1 room. The living area wasn't much better. The rooms could use an updating, toilets didn't want to flush, windows were very dingy/stained & a it of rust around the door. Shower was very soft, no pressure. They were short staffed it seems like many companies these days, so that's not a negative, just info, not a recommend at this time. Although we may go back next year to see if it's been updated. I try to give my lesser reviews a chance to change.
This is by far one of the worst experiences I have had. The only positive about this place was the view, location and staff seem to be nice. The room was filthy. When I got here I had to request new bedding because the bedding had stains on it and the towels were dingy, the floors were sandy, and there was dust on the mirrors in the room. It looks like the ceiling is peeling in part of the room and there was mold in my shower. Looking at the pool it looked like it wasn’t clean either. You could tell they were putting a blue dye in there to make the color of the pool look like it was safe, but it was an unnatural color since you couldn’t see to the bottom. Then to top it off, when trying to park a man walking his dogs questioned us about our parking pass. When explaining we had it on the dash he goes on to tell us he couldn’t see it. I asked if he actually works for the resort and he stated he was one of the owners. I would not recommend this place.
I'll start with the good, the location is wonderful. We wanted to be out of the way, and this place certainly delivered. Beach access was great, pools were great, tiki drinks definitely did the trick. The bad, the staff seem far more interested in serving the interests of the owners than the guests. We had a heck of a rainstorm come in, which caused some flooding into our room, which happens. However, the unintended water feature in the closet was not something we could just overlook. We called down to the front desk, they sent maintenance who came and verified that the fitting on a drain line was installed incorrectly, causing water to spray out onto the water heater, back up into the AC drain and leak out the front, and start flooding right in front of the equipment closet. Maintenance brought some duct tape to try to cover the issue, and left us a wet/dry vac so we could be on flood watch for the rest of the night and clean up to protect the property. We are understanding people, and went with it, with me staying up well past 2 am despite knowing I was going to have my child up early and wanting to go play. At checkout, my partner who actually reserved the room, asked for a little compensation for the trouble. We were told that the issue was out of their control, despite the building maintenance clearly being subpar, and were outright rude to her. Had we not had the rain, the experience would have been a lot different, but we did. The resort had the opportunity to make it right, but denied responsibility despite their own maintenance pointing out exactly what was wrong, saying this wasn't the first time, and as you'll see from the pictures, duct tape is definitely the most permanent temporary repair medium in use. We'll be back to Wrightsville Beach, but definitely not Shell Island Resort. Attached you will find pictures of the improper connection to the drain pipe, duct tape repairs, waterline on the AC filter from the previous nights water issues, and the wet/dry vac we operated in service of the property for nothing all night.
Unfortunately I absolutely do not recommend this hotel. I wish I would have read the reviews before making my decision. First off the staff and location was amazing! The roach that welcomed us into the room was not the welcome we were expecting. There was sand all over the floor and the shower had mold all over the ceiling. The pools were filthy and not properly being filtered. Until this resort makes any big changes I highly recommend not staying there.
Great location! All rooms face the ocean, they have a pool inside and outside, hot tub, beach access and on site restaurants. The staff was nice and accommodating. The food wasn’t bad, convenient if you didn’t want to go out. The rooms need major updating. I learned that they are individually owned and are reevaluated but they should definitely do that more often. The rooms are old and just enough for basic sleep but nothing to write home about or to relax in. We had a group stay and that was the general consensus of the rooms. Overall I would recommend for the convenience and location.
