“Shop with a Cop” benefits underprivileged children from across Dundee Township at our annual event held in early December. Each year, “Shop with a Cop” provides a joyful holiday for underprivileged children who, without this event, may not experience one. The participating children are identified by schools, churches and social services agencies.
On the day of the event, uniformed officers from various agencies volunteer their time to be with the children for breakfast, then head to Walmart for a morning of shopping with their law enforcement partner.
The program is intended to build relationships between officers and children in the community. This year Shop with a Cop hopes to invite 200 kids, referred by police officers, teachers, school counselors or chaplains.
This program was designed to benefit underprivileged children. The purpose of this event is to provide a happier holiday season to these children and to have the children interact with law enforcement officers in a positive setting.
Shop With a Cop also Sponsors food trucks throughout the year. Families are invited to participate in this and over 100 families are fed through these events.
Coat Drives have also been a part of Shop With a Cop. Kids are given coats during the winter season.
Shop With A Cop also Assists families who been victims of fire or other catastrophes in the Dundee Township Area.
Shop With A Cop has a made it it’s mission to assist as many families as possible, not only during the holidays, but also when the need arises.

The 2011 event is being hosted by Police Departments from the Villages of East Dundee, West Dundee, Carpentersville, Gilberts & Sleepy Hollow
The program started in 2004 when Louis Kloepper, then an officer with East Dundee police department, raised some money and donated his own to take 15 kids out to breakfast and then on a shopping trip.
“The first 15 kids, half of them were foster kids,” said Kloepper, who recently retired. “We were the ones who took them away from their families so they were kind of scared of us.”
