Sigma Xi is the global honor society of science and engineering. Founded in 1886, it is one of the oldest and largest interdisciplinary scientific organizations in the world. Its mission is to enhance the heath of the research enterprise, foster integrity in science and engineering, and promote the public's understanding of science for the purpose of improving the human condition.
The honor of conferment of Sigma Xi membership comes in recognition of research and achievement or potential, and has been an early milestone in many notable careers. More than 200 Sigma Xi Members have been recipients of the Nobel Prize.
The Society honors excellence in scientific investigation and encourages a sense of collegiality among researchers in all fields of science and engineering. As an independent, non-profit organization, Sigma Xi has its greatest influence through the programs and activities of its more than 500 chapters, through which the Rice University - Texas Medical Center Chapter is proudly chartered.
