The Silver Terrace Cemetery in Virginia City is a cool older cemetery with quite a few pre-1900 unique headstones. Likely will spend 20-30 minutes here walking around the cemetery reading a few of the headstones. There are some cool and custom headstones and some great views of Virginia City as well.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
I'm one who stops on a cemetery every city i visit. While its really unfair to compare to the much older cemetaries on the east coast, this one still held some unique charm. It isn't very big, probably able to haphazardly peruse and walk through in 30 minures. Uneven and gravel filled terrain with no delineated plots. There's an 1.5 hour audio tour that can be downloaded through the app store and a brochure outside the gate. I wished all cemetaries were as informative.
The rich history here is awesome and so are the views! Walking around is a little challenging, more so for us older folks uneven, gravel/dirt, aged broken grave markers and headstones and no easy way to get to other areas since they block off the drive down. Would have loved to be able to see some of the other areas but the heat of the day, distance plus slopes made it too hard to visit those.
I felt goosebumps while exploring this place. The stench of the dead wafts in the air. It’s one of the most beautiful cemetery I visited mostly families of miners were buried here according to their religion. Most tombstones dated back in the 18th century.
Nice cemetery, easy to walk around. Take brochure before you go so you can read about the individuals buried there. Brochure is located on the donation station as you approach the gate. Lots of lizards, too!
My husband visited the cemetery twice this weekend. We love old cemeteries! On Sunday we went on the Voices of the Past Tour. It was absolutely amazing! The actors were wonderful! Funny and very informative. BRAVO! We highly recommend the tour.
Loved this creepy old cemetery. This is in Virginia City just outside of Reno and well worth the drive up the mountain to visit it and the city for a day trip. Most of the graves were from the 1800's which adds to the creepy factor for some reason. I don't think I would want to visit this place after dark though!
My man thought it was spooky but I thought it was peaceful and sweet. Very old and it shows. A lot of graveside don't have headstones anymore
I had the opportunity to visit this grand old cemetery during a past few occasions. The location is historic with graves over a hundred plus years old. It was interesting to witness the types of grave sites from the ones with marble head stones enclosed with wrought iron fences to the poorer class of wooden head markers in which the inscriptions were sand blasted off by nature many years ago. In the back of the cemetery, you'll find another section of grave sites with a locked gate. I figure the keepers want to protect this portion of the cemetery, but if you walk around the perimeter of this section, you can find access to allow yourself in. During one trip, I was exploring this section. The sun was going down but there was plenty of available light left to see. At one point, I stopped at a fork in the trail deciding on what direction to turn when I felt three distinct taps on my right shoulder. Being a bit startled, I looked around but there was no one there. Did I come in contact with a spirit from the past? Needless to say, I practically ran out of the cemetery and into the nearest bar. They say the cemetery is haunted and I believe it's true, but I still wish I knew who tried to obtain my attention. Spooky!
Great history and views from this cemetery. Sometimes beautiful and sometimes a little creepy but you just can't beat the history here. Wear comfortable shoes you walk on ravel. Please leave a small donation to help this cemetery.
