Cosmetology Programs

The School of Cosmetology has two purposes:
- To train students to become professional cosmetologists, estheticians and manicurists.
- To offer quality cosmetology (hair care), esthetician (skin care/makeup) and manicure/pedicure (nail care) services to the public at affordable prices.

School of Cosmetology General Information:
- Classes are held at the School of Cosmetology, 3340 Los Angeles Avenue, Simi Valley.

- Students seeking permission to enter the School of Cosmetology with previous hours from any cosmetology school must contact the school to make an appointment to meet with the supervising instructor. You must meet with the instructor PRIOR to enrolling in the program.

- Due to the number of students applying for the Cosmetology and Esthetician programs, admittance into these programs will be through a lottery process. (see course description for more details)

- Payment for the program is due upon enrollment in the program. Additional payments (Cosmetology program only) and purchasing of materials (starter Kit) will occur once program has started. A calendar of payment dates and specific amounts will be given to students upon enrollment.

- Starter kit must be purchased through the Simi Valley Adult School and Career Institute Student Store.

- Students are required to wear a school uniform which must be purchased through the Simi Valley Adult School and Career Institute.

- Students enrolled in any of the Cosmetology programs are required to fully participate in all aspects of the program, including performing beauty services/ operations on the public as well as classmates.

- To be eligible to take the State Board licensure exam, students must show proof of successful completion of the tenth grade or high school diploma/GED.

Program Pre-Requisites:

- Students must be at least 18 years of age on the first day of class.

- Students must have a valid form of identification AND a social security card.

- Students must be able to speak, read, write English, 9th grade reading level is recommended.


REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR COSMETOLOGY, ESTHETICIAN AND MANICURING
Due to the number of students applying for the Cosmetology program, admittance through a lottery registration system is sometimes required. Interested individuals must meet the prerequisites.


Cosmetology

Course Dates: Lottery: 2/4/14 for the class beginning 2/18/14 (Day/Evening)
Lottery: 5/27/14 for the class beginning 6/10/14 (Day)
Lottery: 8/19/14 for the class beginning 9/2/14 (Day/Evening)
Lottery: 2/3/15 for the class beginning 2/17/15 (Day/Evening)

Course Fee: Total of $6,230 (approximately). Course fees: total approximately $4,500 paid in three equal payments of $1,500 plus kit. $1,500 is due upon enrollment with two additional installments-- $1,500 (approximately) is due four months after the start of the program. $1,730 (approximately) due the second day of class for program supplies.

Course Description: The Cosmetology program covers all operations involving hair, including permanent waving, chemical relaxing, hair cutting and blow-drying, as well as manicures, pedicures and facials. This program takes approximately one year (day students) to approximately 18 months (evening students) to complete. Once enrolled in a program (day or evening), students must remain in that program. Switching program times is not permitted. Approximately 1600-hours are required to be eligible for State Board licensure.

REGISTRATION FOR COSMETOLOGY:
To attend the lottery registration, qualified applicants must report to Room 402 promptly at 8:30 a.m. for the DAY program, or 10:00 a.m. for the EVENING program.

Esthetician

Course Dates: Classes begin 1/21/14 (Evening), 5/13/14 (Day), 7/8/14 (Evening),
11/12/14 (Day), 1/20/15 (Evening). Online registration is available.

Course Description: The Esthetician Course includes basic skin care, spa treatments, plain and electrical facials, make-up application, cosmetic preparation, depilatory and waxing procedures. This program takes approximately six months to complete (day and evening students). Approximately 600-hours are required to be eligible for State Board licensure. Students perform skin care on each other and the school’s customers. Students must not be using Retin-A, Accutane, or have had a recent skin peel.

Manicuring

Course Dates: Fall semester class.

Course Description: (00836) The Manicuring Course includes all phases of manicuring, salon and work ethics and safety issues. Students will develop practical skills and receive specialized training classes for complete nail services. This 400 hour program prepares students for an entry level position and to pass the CA State Barbering & Cosmetology Bureau Licensing Examination.
