Founded in 1960, Skills is one of the oldest and largest human service organizations serving people with disabilities in central Pennsylvania. Today, Skills provides residential, community, employment, and behavioral health services to individuals with physical, developmental, and emotional disabilities in 16 Pennsylvania counties and employs over 1,000 staff.
Skills is committed to creating opportunities and providing choice and support, promoting recovery to enhance all aspects of people's lives.
Community Services:
Skills' Adult Training services offer participants the opportunity to learn daily living skills, to interact with their peers, and to perform volunteer work in the community.
Skills' Vocational Training services offer individuals access to vocational options including personal and work adjustment.
Skills' Employment Services provide an avenue for participants to develop and pursue career goals. Job coaches work with people with disabilities to help them choose, train, secure and maintain employment in the community.
Janitorial services offer individuals an opportunity to experience real-life job opportunities with the support of a supervisor who provides on-the-job assistance.
Residential Services:
Skills' Lifesharing program places individuals in the home of a host individual or family.
Skills' licensed Community Home services provide people who have developmental disabilities with support and supervision in private, residential settings.
Skills' Supported Living services assist consumers to live on their own.
Skills’ Behavioral Health services use a support team model to help children, adolescents and adults with mental disabilities to develop appropriate means of interacting in a variety of settings. The services aim to help individuals better manage challenging situations, make better choices and decisions, take responsibility for their actions, integrate more fully into the community, improve their relationships, and live in the least restrictive environment possible.
Skills' Children and Adolescent Services provide safety, protection, and support services in a community home for children in county custody. The program's goal is to reunify the child with his or her family when both are ready. The reunification process includes program supports such as family education, counseling, and structured daily living activities for the children. All services incorporate the core principles of the following:
