Skyline Caverns

About

In addition to being the closest cavern to Washington, D.C., we are home to the rare Anthodite crystals, entertaining guides, and amazing gift shop!

Description

Discovered in 1937 near the opening of the Skyline Drive, the Skyline Caverns have welcomed tours since 1939.

A knowledgeable guide will escort you though the Caverns, explaining the geological history while challenging your imagination; making your tour educational, exciting, and entertaining.

This geologically "young" cavern is still alive and active today. The dripping of water you find throughout the Caverns is a reminder of this constant growth, the beauty of which is shared with thousands of wide-eyed visitors each year.

A limited tour group size along with award winning lighting systems allow you to enjoy the splendor of The Capital Dome, Rainbow Trail, The Painted Desert, The Wishing Well, The Grotto of Nativity, Cathedral Hall, The Shrine, Fairyland Lake, The Anthodities and much, much more. Included are three underground streams and 37-foot Rainbow Waterfall.

Above ground, Skyline Caverns offers two more attractions for all ages: the Skyline Arrow Miniature Train and the Enchanted Dragon Mirror Maze.

These are fairly "young" caverns geologically speaking, so the formations are not as extensive as some of the older caverns in the area. Our tour guide was very well informed and provided a great narrative during the tour. We enjoyed our tour as there were only 4 others with us some we could take our time and examine the caverns in some detail. The guide answered all our questions without hesitation. A very enjoyable and informative experience.
A Groupon coupon put this on our radar and we are so glad it did! The caverns were great. Our guide was informative and lots of fun stories to share. We enjoyed seeing the signature wall from the Civil War soldiers and hearing about the dance parties down in the large cavern. The guide was especially good with the little fella' nervous about the lights being turned off. Bring a picnic and make a day of it. A great way to reinforce geology school lessons or simply enjoy a unique date:
We had a great time visiting the Skyline Caverns. Our tour guide was very funny and informative about the caverns. Whenever we had a question, she had the answer for it. The caverns are very beautiful and lots to see!
I loved visiting this location on the rainy day that I was in Front Royal. It was about an hour tour but the group can linger if you need more time. A great summer activity as it is much colder underground. Home to some incredibly rare sea urchin-like formations only going found in a few locations in the world. The tour guide was funny, informative, helpful, and kind. The gift shop has really cute dishes and rocks and really nice items that were reasonably priced. I’d come again just to see the colored lights in the caves again.
Beautiful caverns and such a knowledgeable tour guide! It was an amazing experience and we really enjoyed it. The colored lights really highlight the natural beautyVisited onWeekdayWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$21–30
Caverns were beautiful! William was our guide and he did amazing! He answered all questions and made the tour fun. Will definitely visit again.
Such a great experience! Our tour was small - just 10 people. Our guide was so knowledgeable and kind answering questions. He was engaged and interested and patient with our busy younger kids. The cave was SO beautiful!!
Our guide, William, was very knowledgeable! The second half of the tour is better than the first which was not very exciting or beautiful. The train was also super fun! The gift shop was kinda meh
We came here at the end of October 2021. This cavern is smaller than Luray cavern but it is still worth a visit. The ticket includes a guided tour which was very informative but our guide talked so fast it was hard to catch some of the things she said. The price is cheaper than Luray caverns. Overall it was a great rainy day activity and recommended to visit this place if you’re in the area.
Absolutely loved it. My girlfriend surprised me by taking us here on the way to our vacation spot - incredibly fun and absolutely beautiful caverns. Aiden was an awesome tour guide, informative and fun - would love to see this place get more attention. Puppy friendly must be carried, I believe and they have even held weddings in the "chapel" chamber. Definitely give this place a look.
