Smith-McDowell House

Description

The Smith-McDowell House is located in Asheville, North Carolina. It is the city's first mansion and oldest surviving house, and the oldest brick structure in Buncombe County. The house was constructed in the 1840s for James McConnell Smith. His daughter Sarah Smith-McDowell and her husband, William Wallace McDowell bought the house after her parents died. It is a blend of architectural styles dating from its original 1840 construction and additions completed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The floor plan is typical of Adam style, better known as Federal style in America. It is a double-pile plan, Flemish bond, five-bay mansion that features a double-tier porch semi-engaged beneath an extension of its gable roof. Each three-bay end wall has a pair of interior chimneys. The brick walls are 12 to 20 inches thick. The original Federal character that dominated the house's exterior remains in the large fanlights above the front doors and in the delicacy of the front porch that is supported by twelve slender fluted columns (six on each level). The house has corbelled cornices that feature dentils. The exterior of the building at one time displayed penciling, and remnants remain in several spots. Although much of the dwelling's original Greek Revival interior woodwork was replaced during a Neoclassical style remodeling in 1913, the second floor's mantels, window frames, and door frames are original, dating from the 1840s. A one-story semicircular sunroom was added to the southern end wall in the late 1880s.

When in Asheville, North Carolina there's always the Biltmore House but there's other beautiful Victorian style homes to see two. And this is certainly one of them! Well worth the time to tour!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Couldn't hate it... couldn't see it. Called and found out time of operation. Checked website...closed. We took the time out of our vacation to see this and closed. Apparently for a long time by the looks of the upkeep. Sad
Nice place for a local history lesson. Lots of artifacts to look at. They did a nice job with the rooms and displays. The docent did a good job telling us the history of the house.
Was a nice little visit with our out of town guest. Historical items on display. I liked some of the old firearms. The ladies liked the tea sets and historically accurate furnishings. They served us tea after the short tour. I have driven past here hundreds of times and liked knowing the historical significance of this place. It sits on a prime piece of property too.
Shout out to Lisa! We didn't realize that the tours were for pre-purchased tickets only when we showed up at 1140 because of the pandemic, but they let us book a spot for noon since they had no reservations. They were all so nice! Lisa is so enthusiastic about her job, and we learned so much from her. Thanks to y'all for making this a fun learning experience! - Frankie Raye from Florida
Definitely worth the price of admission! Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. I went during the Afternoon Tea exhibit month so I enjoyed a free cup of tea as well! Interesting and beautiful historic stop worth checking out!

Nice stop in Asheville. Rooms are set up to represent different decades in the home's history. Interesting approach. Gave me a feel of local history. Go at your own pace was nice too
My husband wanted to tour the house on his birthday and after entering we watched a quick video. Then Sharon took us on a facinating tour. She is so very knowledgeable and passionate about the house it was contagious!!!
