To make short term mission available to the churches of the South Coastal District of the Wesleyan Church with a primary focus on the Caribbean.
Director: Woody Cook
HISTORY
HUGH POPE, a former District Superintendent for the SCD, started taking mission teams to Jamaica in 2000. In 2005 he started Jamaica Faith Missions which later became Jamaica Sonshine Ministries. Hugh made 27 trips to Jamaica ending with an individual trip in 2010. Hugh’s health was declining and went on his last trip against his doctor’s advice. Hugh went to be with his Lord July 17, 2011.
TRIPS
June 14th 2011 a team of 4 pastors (DS Dan Berry, Dr. Dan Finch, Rev. Steve Lane and Rev. Rick Shockley) went to Jamaica to explore continuing the mission work in Jamaica that Hugh pioneered. It was determined after that trip that the district would continue his work and extend it to the Caribbean General Conference. Dr. Dan Berry, his wife Debbie and Dr. Dan Finch and his wife Carol went back in January 2012 to teach leadership development.
The 1st district sponsored trip was October 2-8 2012. A team led by Steve Lane and Evangelist Tim Jones went to Montego Bay for a crusade at the Daniel Town Church. March 11- 18 2013 a construction team led by Woody Cook went to Jamaica and spent a week working at the Norwood church repairing tile, plumbing and electrical problems. . We also help with the first crusade ever held in Kingston in October 2014. In March 2014 a team went to Jamaica and worked on the Falmouth Church.
OUR VISION
South Coastal Missions wants to fulfill the Great Commission by going and making disciples and Great Commandment of loving God and others by promoting missions at home and abroad. We want to encourage churches and individuals to participate in local missions by ministering to those closest to them (family), reaching out to the community
SOUTH COASTAL MISSIONS wants to encourage and assist the churches of the South Coastal District of the Wesleyan Church by promoting ongoing mission work at their churches. We want to provide mission opportunities for those who would like to go on a trip and are unable to because their church doesn’t offer one. We also want to provide opportunities to those who aren’t able to participate in one that their church offers.
OUR PRIMARY FOCUS is Jamaica but we are planning to reach out to the entire Caribbean Conference. The Caribbean Conference consists of 30,000 constituents, in 187 churches in the 13 districts of the Caribbean. South Coastal Missions went to Antigua in August 2014 to the Caribbean General Conference to share our vision to partner with the churches of the Caribbean. Their mission outreach is Belize and we hope to go on an exploratory trip there in October 2014.
South Coastal Missions is partnering with our sister churches in the Caribbean General Conference. Our goal is to help with leadership development, assist churches with their VBS, work with them to put on crusades and work teams to finish the Falmouth Church (Hugh Pope’s last project). The church will continue to be funded through his ministry, Jamaica Sonshine Ministries.
