On my first day, I saw students passing acid tablets and joints around the lunch table while the teachers stood around at the edge of the cafeteria and did nothing. If that doesn't epitomize South Hadley High School, I really don't know what else could. Oh, perhaps the bomb threat in my second year? The one that caused the school to limit the students to a single bathroom in the front of the school, which meant long lines and disgusting facilities. It also meant getting in trouble from your teachers for taking a half hour to use the bathroom, rather than a few minutes. Or maybe the number of suicide attempts? The teachers lacking in empathy, who ignored pleas for help? The unprofessional staff in the student counseling center who were overheard, time and time again, commenting on the 'stupidity' of the students? The mass of drug use? The lack of funding for decent art, music, etc programs? The uncoordinated events that sometimes ended in bodily harm to staff and students alike? Or how about the bullies? The ones the staff ignored, the ones that were not stopped, the ones who drove a girl to kill herself? Really, which part sums up this mess of a high school the best? I loathed this place in my time, and I've heard of very little improvement since. Honestly, I beg you not to send you child to this school. If you love them, if you want them to feel safe, and cared for by their teachers. Do not send them here.
I'm glad I attended SHHS. During my tenure in South Hadley Schools I felt the high school staff, teachers and administrators of all levels, were consistently approachable and interested in their students. I wish the academics had been a bit more challenging in the classroom we're not Amherst, but I was encouraged to challenge myself outside the classroom through extracurriculars. The facilities were also fairly nice, renovated around 2000.
Great school, my daughter loves it there! Dan Smith was a good principle always returning my phone calls promptly! Haven't had a bullying issue yet!
THIS SCHOOL SUCKS!!!!!! THEY ARE VERY BITTER TO ME AS A RECRUITER AND I HAVE DONE NOTHING TO THEM... THEY TREAT ME LIKE I AM THE BAD GUY!!! SO I AM TAKING NOTES EVERYTIME I CALL OR DO HIGH SCHOOL VISITS.. AFTER THIS SCHOOL YEAR IS OVER ME AND THE OTHER SERVICE RECRUITERS WILL DO THE PAPER WORK NEEDED TO HAVE THEM LOSE SOME FEDERAL FUNDING....
