i cannot say enough about this bank! They are very kind and willing to help. When i was at a point where i needed a positive place to bank, i was referred to South State Bank and they have been the most positive influence on getting my business and my life back on track. The customer service is impeccable, right down to my transaction slips i receive inside the bank, that have a nice positive quote stamped on it! Thank you South State Bank for believing in me and treating me like i am a cherished customer. You're the best!
Since retirement I’ve been Banking with South State Bank in Canton Georgia for several years. Other than not being able to make atm deposits which means you have to go there during business hours or have auto deposits I had no issues until recently. My deposits are traditionally in person or automatic however in January I was called to Florida to assist a friend who was passing away. I was written a check to help cover my cost to care for them while there. I did a phone deposit where the check is copied and deposited via your phone and online banking with the understanding it would take 2-3 days to be deposited into my account. This did not happen. I called the bank 3 times. First you are sent to a general number not your branch you go over the issue then get transferred to your branch. My first call after transfer was disconnected from the branch with no call back. Second call I spoke to a teller, put on hold for manager who then sent the teller back to say they would not deposit the check till the 29th of the month approximately 14 days after deposited! I had the person that wrote the check call their bank and it had cleared their bank the day I deposited it. A 3rd call to the bank. Eventually the manager called me back. Regardless of my explaining the situation and reason for the deposit and that the check had already cleared I was still told they were holding the funds without release because they said this was not my normal activity & the fine print would tell me of such policies. I never saw anything about that when I read about such forms of deposits. Remember I am retired & the check had cleared the bank it was written on. I had to have family deposit cash into my account to use to care for my friend who actually passed away five days before they released my funds! If I had known I could have simply cashed the check at the Florida bank it had been written on. Although I hesitated to write this review I felt it worth sharing for those who are retired and living on a fixed income in case you find yourself in a similar situation. I must say that I was appalled at this policy. And how it was handled. I was in a stressful situation caring for my friend that was passing and being responsible for their burial afterwards and the funds had already cleared the bank they were written on. Of course they made profits from the funds I deposited that they held for nearly two weeks while my situation was made even more stressful. Sad how callous financial institutions can be but I’m thankful I had family that was able to help me by making deposits into my account during that time. Just be aware. If I ever need to make another online deposit I’ll call first to make sure they’ll release it to my account within 2-3 days. Two stars only because my other transactions have been fine but this one was criminal from my point of view and not handled well. bottom line...if the check cleared why was it not released into the account!
If I could give this location zero stars, I would. They let a stranger walk into their location, deposit a check for $3,000, then two minutes later immediately withdraw it FROM MY ACCOUNT and the teller didn’t think that was suspicious. I didn’t even have $3,000 in my account, so now I have a charge back and that account is completely cleared in the negatives. How do you guys let this happen? What’s the point of having customers fill out signature cards if you don’t check them?
Another Bank stealing inappropriate funds from unfunded ACH transfers. We have been a customer since 2001 at the precursor banks, Habersham, and CB&T, and since 2010-11 at the South State Bank. In that time we used a checking account primarily to receive monthly benefits payments from the Veterans Administration and the United Church of Christ. Deposited funds are generally used to purchase items on Amazon and eBay via ACH transfers. In the twenty some odd years of our time with these banks we may have overdrawn the checking account once or twice; but recently SSB has demonstrated just how nasty overdrafts can get. SSB does not provide low cost “overdraft transfer” protection. What they offer costs a depositor is a “XYZ plan” with an $50 activation fee, a $200 minimum balance, and a transfer fee of $30 per episode, which is essentially the same as the $35 per episode they charge for NSF episodes. This is in contrast to other Banks which do the “overdraft transfers” from either Bank credit cards or Savings Accounts, and generally charge about $5 per episode. The basis for putting SSB on my s**t-list is how they recently charged me $142 for two ACH based NSF with a face value of about $20, and would not waive any portion of these fees. Yes, you read that correctly: $142 for two almost simultaneous transactions from purchases on eBay where our PayPal debit card did not cover the purchase costs, and payment “fell back” to our checking account on SSB, which did not have sufficient money on deposit and thus resulted in a NSF. It is obvious we did not intend fraud, malice, or irresponsibility in the actions, and would have been perfectly comfortable with depositing funds to cover the issues; but when the fees jumped to $142, the issue degenerated into anger at SSB for taking the opportunity to “f**k-over” a depositor because they are allowed to do so. The unfortunate result from our standpoint is we can do nothing about this – they held funds deposited by the VA to cover these fees, which still leaves our account with an $8 negative balance. And one of the SSB Bank’s officers who has known me personally for at least fifteen years would not even reply to my phone call to him requesting his intervention. Ok, so SSB, and those other financial institutions that can legally rip-off customers with wholly inappropriate overdraft fees deserve to be held accountable – but who’s going to do so?
