Southern California Genealogical Society is a volunteer-managed genealogical society with over 2,000 genealogist and family historian members.
The Southern California Genealogical Society exists to foster interest in family history and genealogy, preserve genealogical materials, and provide instruction in accepted and effective research techniques.
The Society publishes a number of cemetery, death, marriage, and naturalization indices for Los Angeles County. An ongoing project of the Society is the 1890 Project, which is designed as a substitute for the lost 1890 US Census. Society volunteers are working to document the approximately 63,000 residents of the county, as well as visitors and guests to the region.
The website, www.scgsgenealogy.com, is designed as an information source for our out-of-area members. The site contains free information as well as a members-only section that includes nearly 60 archived sessions from the popular Webinar series, as well as free at-home access to World Vital Records.
Special Interest Groups provide a framework for solving research challenges for specific ethnic groups and software users. Interest groups have been formed for DNA, Writers, Irish, German, French-Canadian, African American, RootsMagic, and Legacy Family Tree. In addition, the Society hosts a monthly lunch-and-learn session with speakers on a variety of topics of interest.
Professional research services are available through the Society. Three research teams (German, French-Canadian, and general SCGS) will provide fee-based research assistance. Members receive a discount on research services.
The Society also produces the annual Genealogy Jamboree, which is one of the three largest genealogy events in the US. The 49th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree "Unlock Your Lineage" will be held June 1-June 2, 2018, at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Hotel and Convention Center, Burbank, California. The 6th Annual SCGS Genetic Genealogy Conference "Link through DNA" will be held Thursday, May 31, 2018. The Family History Writer's Conference "Love Your Family" will be also be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018.
