Southern Museum of Flight

Description

The Southern Museum of Flight is a civilian aviation museum Birmingham, Alabama USA. The facility features nearly 100 aircraft, as well as engines, models, artifacts, photographs, and paintings. In addition, the Southern Museum of Flight is home to the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame, which presents Alabama Aviation History through collective biography.OverviewNotable aircraft on display include a Wright Flyer, Curtis Pusher, Fokker D-VII, Alexander Eaglerock, F-4 Phantom, F-86 Sabre, AH-1 Cobra, Soviet-built MiGs, Mi-24 Hind, A-12 Blackbird spy plane, the “Lake Murray” B-25, and an array of experimental aircraft. The Lake Murray B-25C Mitchell bomber crashed in South Carolina during a 1943 training exercise. The right engine was torn off during the crash but the crew was able to escape unharmed before she sank to a depth of 150 feet (46m). The aircraft became a dive site for local technical divers until she was raised from the depths of the lake in September 2005. Dr. Bob Seigler who spearheaded the project, John Hodge and Dr. Bill Vartorella, formed the Lake Murray B-25 Rescue Project to salvage the aircraft from the bottom of Lake Murray. After recovery the remains of the aircraft were moved to the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, Alabama for conservation and museum display. A video crew, including maritime video experts from Nautilus Productions, documented the recovery for the Mega Movers series on the History Channel.Featured on display is a diorama exhibit honoring Alabama’s famed Tuskegee Airmen, as well as the Korean War Jets Exhibit and Vietnam War Helicopters Exhibit.

What a wonderful museum! A wide variety of aircraft, vintage to modern. The Mi 24 Hind was a very nice surprise. That thing is huge! The A-12 drone was very unique as well. Give'm a visit! You will enjoy it. They do have a separate outside aircraft on display but those are bad shape needing of some TLC. But worth a drive by for sure.
Great planes on display! Friendly staff. A great value. Some of the signage/info could use some refreshing/improving. Definitely worth the visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
My 11-year-old son & I were away for a tournament & LOVED our visit here. We had 1 hour & were able to make the best visit with the time we had. This museum had so much rich history, artifacts, and vintage military & civilian collections - It was fascinating. I am in a pilot academy currently & this was very inspiring. The sweet gal staff member at the front desk & security guard were angels! They were so kind & helpful. They had such southern hospitality & represented this museum well. We appreciate the opportunity to visit this wonderful gem!
Driving to the Southern Museum of Flight, I was honestly not expecting much. The museum is in a mid to lower class residential area with very little signage apparent. I was immediately overwhelmed. The facility is amazing, the displays are immaculately well-kept. The employees are very friendly. Overall, an amazing & beautiful museum. The Shadow Gallery, highlighting CIA missions and people, was a very unexpected surprise as well. Beautifully well done and worth the entry price alone. I do wish that the static aircraft displays which are down the road a little ways were better kept, but that was made up for by the museum itself. Bravo.
Amazing museum with lots of history information and cool exhibits. They had a whole riom of pictures from the CIA painted by cia artists showing declassified missions. I'm very excited to see their new location when it is finished!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$1–5
Very cool and educational museum. Collection is appropriate for the size. There are also outdoor areas, and those planes are understandably less well kept.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
Really loved this place. Lots of variety and well maintained. Was pretty cheap too, only 5 bucks. The staff were super friendly.

We had a great time taking our family to the flight museum! Our young kids loved it. Pricing was reasonable, and parking a breeze. The exhibits were really fun and informative. There’s plenty to do and see; enough to keep you busy for several hours. The surrounding neighborhood is a bit rundown and some of the exhibits were closed or not clearly labeled; nothing that’s a deal breaker though. There’s a fun gift shop at the end. I would recommend it to others!
I visited this museum for the first time today, even though I live less than 10 minutes away. I nanny a 2 yo kiddo and he absolutely loved the airplanes and helicopters. This place isn’t flashy but it’s packed with planes, models, and history. The staff, from the front desk to the tour guides, were all so kind and welcoming. Also, they have a little kid playroom up to age 6! That was an unexpected bonus. The whole facility was so well kept and after overhearing a few of the folks lead field trip tours, I was so impressed with the knowledge of the guides who I believe are volunteers. After visiting, we drove down towards the private side of the BHM airport to see the dozens of planes on drive-by display. I am the daughter of a retired fighter jet pilot / current commercial airline pilot. I’m definitely taking my dad the next time he visits! Also, I paid $5 for 90 minutes of air conditioned fun and learning. In Alabama, you know the AC alone costs more than that
