Sparta Township is a civil township of Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 8,938 at the 2000 census.GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.5sqmi, of which, 36.5sqmi of it is land and 0.04sqmi of it (0.08%) is water.Most of the township is served by zip code 49345, northern portions are served by 49330 (Kent City), and a very small portion on the western part is served by 49403 (Conklin).Most of the children under 18 are served by Sparta Area Schools. Northern portions are served by Kent City Community Schools.DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there were 8,938 people, 3,301 households, and 2,409 families residing in the township. The population density was 244.7 per square mile (94.5/km²). There were 3,449 housing units at an average density of 94.4 per square mile (36.5/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.13% White, 0.47% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.54% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.58% of the population.
