Spring Mill State Park

Description

Spring Mill State Park offers a powerful illustration of the link between the natural and cultural worlds. The water flowing from several cave springs led to the founding of an industrial village in the early 1800s. Pioneer entrepreneurs took advantage of a constant water source that never froze, using it to power several gristmills, a wool mill, a saw mill, and a distillery. In turn, pioneer settlers shaped the landscape around the village, clearing land for agriculture and timber.

Visitors have an opportunity to hike on any of the Parks eight graveled hiking trails or bike on the 2 mile mountain bike trail.

Spring Mill has 187 Electric/water camp sites and 36 primitive sites available that visitors can reserve. The park also has Spring Mill Inn with comfortable rooms, an indoor-outdoor pool for inn guests and a restaurant that is open to all.

Picnicking, hay rides, a nature center and an Olympic sized swimming pool are also available.

All park facilities have seasonal operations so be sure to contact the park for current operating hours.

Beautiful!!! If you’re a photographer , and enjoy history.. you’ll have plenty that will catch they eye. If you’re a parent, and want to teach your children about prairie history, FANTASTIC spot!! There are SEVERAL trails, all from avid hiker to casually strolling. Donaldson Cave has quite a few stairs, and they can be wet, so be careful. We visited from San Diego, and as I’m a history buff, photographer, and designer… this experience was beyond words! The property is maintained, as are the trails. Far exceeded any expectations I may have had!
It's a very nice place, our grandson loved the park. We went to go swimming and as soon as we paid and went in nobody was allowed to swim for 15, then 30 mins because of a lightning strike or something so we waited about 30 minutes and it was already about 7. We all left and the person was nice enough to give us our money back since we didn't even touch the water and we went Sunday and the pool was very nice, along with the kids pool. Our grandson is 4 and he loved walking through Pioneer Village even though it was closed. We will go back when it's open. Pet friendly was very good as we had to take our 2 week old bottle baby goat because his momma rejected him and everyone just loved him. Playground: Grandson and his friends loved the playground. Dog-friendliness: Everyone's Dogs were on leashes and nice as we had a Yorkie and a 2 week old goat that we would try to walk. The Baby goat isn't use to a leash but everyone loved him too.
There are several view points here including four caves though they are tiny. The pioneer village has 1800s western vibe which is kinda nostalgic. A big lake inside the park where people can fish or boat. Several many trails around it. A beautiful state park. Definitely worth visiting again.
If you are close to the south of Indiana, you should definitely visit this park. Entrance for Indiana residence 7$, non-residence $9. There are several parts you would enjoy: Pioneer village: The most impressive historical evidence about housing that were built in early 19th century, 1830. A family with 9 members lived in a small house in modern language - studio room. Some reach people build two floors houses. Their bedroom was separate. I think rich people lived in this area because not everyone could build houses back on those days, I believe. Hamer cave: Not much to see. You can't walk but look at it from a far side. It's near the Pioneer village. Davidson cave: Wonderful!! You can walk further inside if you have a flashlight. Phone flash wouldn't help you because it's completely dark and constantly wet. Food: they serve food in Pioneer Village. Not many choices, but you wouldn't starve either. Playground: Kids can play in the river. : Restrooms: very clean.
One of the best state parks inside Indiana. This park has small falls and springs, medieval model town, caves, fishing spots, boat rides, lake, a lot of trails and a beautiful inn. The Pioneer village has a nice picnic spot and the village itself is beautiful. The inn was temporarily closed when we went there. You can but tours for the Pioneer village during the spring.
We had the best family vacation! Between hiking, cave exploring, the Twin caves guided tour, visiting the pioneer village, and spending a hot afternoon at the pool, the entire family ranging in age from 1 to 65 had a great time. Restrooms: The restrooms were always clean and well-stocked. Having multiple small children, I especially appreciated the family restroom-shower combo available.
We always travel with our rescue dog London, a Boxer/Lab mix. We're all used to the flat land of northern Indiana, but LOVE hiking what the map lists as the rugged trails at Spring Mill. The park is gorgeous, with a variety of trails, clean bathrooms, and a nice nature center. I'm continually impressed with a little trash there is on the trails in this park. Sadly, that cannot be said for all of our state parks. Dogs are not allowed in the Pioneer Village, so I haven't been there in a few years, but it is well worth a visit if you're not traveling with a dog. There are friendly, knowledgeable staff who do a great job of interpreting the history of the buildings. Dog-friendliness: Dogs are welcome throughout the park, with the exception of the Pioneer Village and public buildings. I believe that the Inn has dog friendly rooms, but the entire Inn is closed this year 2023 for renovations.
Lots to explore! The caves were neat. The twin caves boat tour was definitely worth the $3! The area we camped in was very shaded, which was nice. It was a little cramped when getting our large 5th wheel in but we made it work. The bathrooms need a little updating and the stairs to Donaldson Cave need repair.
I cannot wait to go back to this place to see all the things we couldn't make it to in one day trip. The pioneer village was spectacular, the Hamer cemetery was really Kool, the hike weaved up giant hills with breathtaking views, the forest is gorgeous, and the cave was really Kool. So much beauty in so many places
Absolutely love this place. 1800’s pioneer village. Great place to take the family. I’ve been a few times. Never gets old
