If ever I go on a walk and I come to a river or canal I always like to cross the body of water on a bridge or similar structure rather than jump in and swim. Fortunately, there was a bridge here which, coincidentally, happened to be on the path I was following. Well done Chelmsford.
Quality swanage on the river. It's a bit misleading as I couldn't get myself locked-up no matter how much I tied. Tranquil beauty.
Your chance to discover parts of Chelmsford away from the shops. Enjoy the walk and experience
Decent location for a walk. Good cycling lanes, plenty of parking options nearby
Nice river walk from the city centre. Newly refurbished lock gates in 2017. The local area has been recently renovated with a new housing estate on the south side. It’s a nice albeit long 7 miles walk along the river all the way to Papermill Lock and beyond.

Although the walk to this place is pleasant, there is a lot of building going on before you get there so take that in mind and plan to push on after this location. Chelmsford is a very nice city and has multiple rivers joining up. The outskirts are particularly nice as with this area if you push on.
Great access point for the River Chelmer.
Despite only a very short walk from the centre of town, it feels like your very much in the countryside despite the nearby developments. It really is a beautiful setting on a gloriously warm.sunny day
Chelmsford's waterways run through the heart of the city and the working locks are fascinating and precious things. Operating through Spring and Summer months from Springfield Basin to Sandford Mill, river cruises offer a different perspective, taking a route that is immersed in nature - a linear nature reserve. Kingfisher, swan, water vole and otter are returning to the landscape. Take time out to enjoy and celebrate the beauty of this place.
