We are a diocesan college preparatory school located in West Islip, New York, educating grades 9th - 12th.
Our teachers, coming from varied backgrounds and experiences, are committed to imparting specialized academic knowledge to their students. The community spirit at St. John’s allows teachers to know their students as individuals both inside and outside of the classroom. Our student to teacher ratio is approximately 16:1. In this setting, students learn in an atmosphere of close and caring academic instruction and leadership.
Faculty members at St. John’s are required to possess a Master’s Degree, have New York State Teacher Certification, and continue on in the educational journey by participating in post-Master’s work, doctoral studies, conferences and workshops.
Teachers and administrators at St. John’s recognize the impact they have on the young people they meet and work with each day. The work of service and justice is not just for Campus Ministry but for all who are part of this community. More than educators of the minds, teachers at St. John’s also nourish the soul. They work to be present to students before and after school, by moderating clubs and coaching and participating in various retreat and social experiences.
Our faculty also serve as a witness to what it is to live a good, Christian life by who they are and what they do inside and outside of the classroom. Faculty members include Sisters of St. Francis, Sisters of St. Dominic and lay women and men.
Every teacher who works at St. John’s knows the important dual role they play – to not only encourage thought but to empower students to act for the good of others and the world in which they live!
In the spirit of St. John the Baptist, prophet and herald, we, a diocesan college preparatory school, educate a mosaic of young people from a variety of backgrounds and of diverse abilities. We nurture mind, body and soul in an environment of mutual respect, social justice, and loving compassion. Guided by Catholic tradition, this community- students, faculty, staff, graduates and their families – strives to live lives rich in courage, faith and gentleness, and in so doing, bring the Gospel to a world in need.
A Catholic Community: We believe in the teachings of Jesus and the mission of the Church. As stewards of the Catholic tradition, we educate our students in the faith, worship as believers, and live out Catholic social teaching. St. John the Baptist is a place where a diversity of students, families, faculty and staff find acceptance and sense of community. We help to form both hearts and souls.
An Educational Community: We believe in academic integrity and excellence as an educational institution. Each student of this community is challenged to discover, utilize, and develop his or her intellectual abilities. Maximizing academic potential prepares the student both for college and opportunities in the world.
A Caring and Responsible Community: We believe in the development of the whole person. We empower young people to handle not only the academic, but spiritual, social and psychological challenges of adolescence. To achieve this end, we hold each student responsible for his or her own decisions. Discipline is embraced in a spirit of accountability, trust, and justice, but tempered with compassion and understanding.
A Social Community: We believe in giving every student the opportunities to discover, utilize, and develop his or her God-given gifts and talents. Extensive co-curricular opportunities allow the student to grow to his or her full potential. Such endeavors build friendships as well as a spirit of collaboration and cooperation.
A Serving Community: We believe we are called to serve each other. Students are challenged to give of their time and talent, starting within the walls of the building and extending into local neighborhoods, churches and even the global community.
Rewarding Catholic Education.
