The Mission of St. John the Baptist School is to ensure quality education, forming mature Christian persons who actively contribute to the community.
St. John the Baptist School was built in 1955 when Rev. Michael C. Ryan was the pastor of the parish. The opening of the school, however, was delayed by one year due to difficulties in obtaining a community of Sisters to staff it. In August 1956, six Sisters of Mercy came from Ireland and in September 1956, Saint John the Baptist School opened with 200 students in grades one through four. Over the next four years, the school added grades five through eight. The first eighth class graduated in 1961. In 1960 the primary wing was added.
Kindergarten was started in 1981 and in 1986 Daycare began.
The year 1986 saw the start of the Endowment Fund. The fund was established to assist Saint John the Baptist School families with scholarships for needy students, to fund enrichment programs and eventually to offset tuition increases.
One of the school's proudest accomplishments occurred in 1988 when the school received a National Award from the US Department of Education for Excellence in Education. The criteria for this award included a review by the Department of the school philosophy and goals, curriculum, student acheivement, character development and the school's relationship with the community. In 1995 a multi-media room was completed. The school is in the process of upgrading the computer program with monies from grants and donations.
Student Learning Expectations
Our school is a thriving community where Gospel values and high academic standards are integrated into the life of the school. Together, we the learning community at St. John's School believe and support these expectations:
We are Christian Leaders who live our faith, study our religious traditions and teachings, participate in liturgy, live by JesusÕ example and show compassion and understanding for all God's people and creation.
We are Academic Achievers who excel academically, are prepared for the challenges of high school and beyond, do our best every day, learn inside and outside the classroom, share our learning and help each other learn.
We are Active in our Community and in our World, are connected by faith, family, friends and community, celebrate diversity, respect all people, are courteous and thoughtful, and work to make our world a better place through prayer and action.
We are Confident and We Make Difference by believing in ourselves, leading by example, exploring new ideas, having the courage and the skills to pursue our dreams, are healthy in mind, body and spirit, communicate openly and honestly and make a positive difference in the world!
Together, as partners in the vision, we can truly make a difference for our children, our community, and our world.
