St. Joseph School has done a superb job in virtual learning over the past few months. My children found comfort in seeing their classmates and learning lessons everyday on a Google Meet session. The teachers surprised my children at home with visits to check in on them and bring a smile to their faces. During this pandemic, the strength of the school and teachers exceeded my high expectations. This school not only provides a wonderful education, but also a family community where the teachers and staff care and love the students.
Between three kids, we spent fourteen years at St. Joseph school and it was a beautiful experience. We have been complimented on our kids’ level of respect and kindness by so many over the years and half the reason is the education and discipline they learned attending St. Joe. The main half is the parenting we did and St. Joe was attractive to us as it reiterated our beliefs. Our last year has finished and it’s sad that we are moving on, but we have been so blessed to be a part of the St. Joseph family for so many years. Our kids have made lifelong friendships and the staff has left marks on our hearts forever. God bless this school, staff, students and families!
If I could give this school a negative rating I would. Extremely unprofessional and poor knowledge with leadership. I have never encountered an environment in which a child is targeted not only by other children, but by adults as well. If you don't fit their mold, do yourself a service and look elsewhere. As an educator myself, I have never experienced such a toxic environment. If this is the feeling I left with, I can’t imagine how my child felt.
SJS is the most welcoming community with the greatest teachers committed to academic excellence and building moral character.
St. Joseph Catholic School is one of the best Pre-K to 8 parochial, parish based schools in Oakland County. In my humble opinion, it is the best overall school in the county, but opinions should NEVER matter when choosing a school. The deciding factors should ALWAYS be what the school actually, currently provides and the path it is taking in order to provide your child with a ground work or scaffolding that can be built upon in high school, college, and career. SJS is like other schools in that it provides a solid academic curriculum backed by assessments and data. It provides and supports well rounded extracurricular activities for students to participate in like athletics fall, winter, and spring sports, robotics, the arts, etc. The children learn and play. And, the school welcomes parents and they are an integral part of the success of the school. So what sets SJS apart from everyone else? One obvious reason SJS is a step above all other schools is that it is an Archdiocese guided Roman Catholic school that is parish based. A majority of the student body and staff are Roman Catholic. The students pray together often during the day, study the Roman Catholic religion daily, attend weekly Mass with their families at the parish church which is lead by the parish priests, and complete a number of Roman Catholic sacraments together. Unlike some other "Catholic" schools in the state of Michigan and in particular, Oakland County, SJS is a part of the Detroit Archdiocese and follows, or is directed or overseen by its policies. This fact is important to note. Not all "Catholic" schools follow the Archdiocese or support the organization even though they are listed as an Archdiocese school. It is key to ask if the "Catholic" school follows the Archdiocese. If not, why? Another reason SJS stands out when compared to other schools is that it has a very strong sense of family and togetherness. The school and parish are a hub, if you will, for everyone to come together. The support stemming from the church, school staff, friends, family, and even students is remarkable. How a school works toward togetherness is important. Some schools do not even consider this as a factor in how parents choose schools. SJS works hard to bring the school community together. SJS has a sound and proactive academic system. To name a few items, they combine the State and Archdiocese curriculums to guide their school curriculum. Again, not all "Catholic" schools do this. The school, also, adds in some of the public school elective curriculums. SJS is in partnership with local public schools, both Oxford and Lake Orion. All SJS curriculum areas are routinely reviewed for updates. This is another important note. Not all private school schools have the ways and means to properly review, change, and/or update curriculum. SJS has the ability to modify curriculum in a very timely manner and support academics with one-to-one technology. SJS has worked for years to gradually integrate technology into the school day and have a solid one-to-one student to device program in place. When the pandemic occurred SJS was able to fully implement on-line learning. There was no delay, absence, or lack of academic progress when students weren't able to attend school. Within a week of schools closing across the state of Michigan, SJS, was back on track with students completing school work and meeting with teachers via iPads. On an interesting note, SJS has two Boy Scouts of America organizations, a cub pack and scout troop. The troop was created by the very priest of St. Joseph Catholic Church decades ago. The pack is one of the largest in the Detroit Area. This is another great example of the parish, school, and community all working together to guide and support young children and provide them with another avenue of learning and fun in a non-competitive way. SJS is the best! Come see for yourself and be a part of this wonderful community.
