Stamford Transportation Center

Description

Stamford, officially known as the Stewart B. McKinney Transportation Center or the Stamford Transportation Center, is a major railroad station in the city of Stamford, Connecticut, serving passengers traveling on Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, and Shore Line East. The station is 33mi from Grand Central Terminal. Just northeast of the station is the split for the New Canaan Branch. A few Shore Line East trains terminate at Stamford during the morning rush hour, and originate there in the evening.United Airlines codeshares with Amtrak to provide service out of Stamford station to the train station at United's Northeast hub, Newark Liberty International Airport. As such, the train station has the IATA Airport Code (as an IATA-indexed train station) ZTF.Downtown Stamford is directly north of the station.HistoryRegular daily train service began in Stamford on January 1, 1849. In 1867, a depot was built one block east of the present location. The railroad at that time consisted of two tracks and passed through town on ground level (crossing the streets at grade). In the mid-1890s two more tracks were added to the line and most crossings were elevated and bridged, so the 1867 depot, was razed and replaced.

I used this station for Amtrak and was extremely disappointed. There is no waiting area besides on the platforms and the track signage is horrible. I had to walk around the entire station before I found a sign that had what track my train was on. And then there was no clear signage on how to access that track. When I did figure out how to get to the track, it was only accessible going down a flight of stairs - not ideal for carrying luggage nor accessible to anyone who cannot walk down stairs.
I visited here in 2000, and the Train Station stop has a better schedulemore stops, so we decided to park and hit NYC from here. Nice big station, everyone I had questions for was glad to help me with good answers. One older Gentleman led us upstairs to the ticket counter. Super nice staff at Dunkin Donuts as well.
This station is absolutely disgusting, unsanitary, and disability access is nearly non-existent or unusable. Most of the escalators have been out of order for 6 months, leaving the elevators as the only option for those who can walk but have difficulty with stairs like myself. The elevators are carpeted and always REEK of urine. The inside of the station itself also usually smells like urine and/or feces. I take the train to Stamford for work, and I used to enjoy stopping at the station’s Dunkin for coffee or food before work. Now I don’t go anymore if the escalator on the track 5 street side is down, instead I take the elevator at the far end of track 5 to the parking garage skywalk, then take the parking garage elevator down to the street by track 4. Yes, the parking garage is significantly cleaner than the station! At this point, wouldn’t it make sense to take the carpet out of the elevators and add cameras to discourage people from peeing in them, and make cleanup easier when it does happen?
Does this train station need a bit of an update... yes... is the parking situation easy... no... is it a quick trip to NYC... yes! Listen if you want a great suburb to live in and commute to the city then Stamford is the spot for you! The amount of express trains to the city in the morning and home in the evening are amazing! Stamford is an amazing place to live for a daily commute to the city!
One half of the station is completely inaccessible due to the worst planning I’ve ever seen in my life: closing both the escalator and the elevator at the same time. Had to have my ride drive around the entire station to the other side to pick me up.
Long time google user, first time reviewer. Parking garage is cash only but they don’t tell you until you’re on the way out. To get to your train you have to take 2 escalators and walk 5 minutes even though you can see your track from the sidewalk. You can only use 1 entrance to the garage even though there’s no indication of that until you attempt to get a ticket to enter. ATM probably stole my identity TBD. TL;DR never go to Stamford
Stamford station is well within walking distance to the rest of what Stamford has to offer! The station itself was underwhelming, but the local bus connectivity cannot be underestimated as there's plenty of stops right outside. This station was very clean, and easy enough to navigate, but that's all there is to it. What it does it does well, however I wish there was a little more to this station considering the sizable city it services; This station feels like one for a smaller town. Overall, nothing takes away from this station being good at what it does, especially for finding your Amtrak or MTA connections.
No concern about their travellers or customers about sitting place in lobby. Dirty and smelly......
A beautiful quite road with great views. Looking at the boats was so much fun and so relaxing! It’s hard to miss the gorgeous boats and idea of living on one. The Station itself is clean and concise. Directions are clearly laid out and a good place to compute to the City and super easy to navigate through.
Definitely an appropriate sized station for a city of Stamford’s size. 4 tracks, frequent trains to Grand Central and Penn station. Easy to get transfer at, and I has no problem doing so.
