Statewide Legal Services is a Legal Aid organization in Connecticut serving low income people. We are the largest provider of pro bono services in CT.
At Statewide Legal Services (SLS) we believe knowledge is power. We are a legal aid advice and referral center helping low-income people solve their legal problems. SLS helps the poorest of the poor; income eligibility limits rarely exceed 150% of the federal poverty guidelines. Our advocates provide free legal advice to Connecticut’s low-income men, women and families in the following areas:
• Divorce, custody, child support and other family matters;
• Public Benefits;
• Housing;
• Unemployment compensation.
As a proud member of the Connecticut Network for Legal Aid, SLS works in close collaboration with other legal aid and social service providers. SLS offers a variety of supporting legal services to ensure low income people and their communities understand their rights, remedies and access to our justice system.
SLS has an active and engaged network of Pro Bono Attorneys and Paralegals who generously donate their time delivering quality legal assistance to Connecticut men, women and families who would otherwise go without. Most of our Pro Bono cases are received from our legal aid hotline which provides intake, advice and referral services to low income people.
SLS’s “Pro Bono Your Way” Program is an innovative approach to meet the demands of busy attorneys and paralegals who want to volunteer. Here, pro bono volunteers select programs that meet their legal interests and level of commitment.
“Pro Bono Your Way” programs include :
• Direct Representation
• Legal Clinics
• Call4Law
• Legal Aid outreach events (e.g. Stand Down Veteran Events )
Participating Pro Bono Attorneys receive full primary professional liability insurance coverage, free on-demand (online) legal education classes, and free legal training courses. SLS also provides legal mentorship & support and networking opportunities in collaboration with area Private Bar Associations.
