Strand Theater (Allentown, Pennsylvania)

Description

The Strand Theater is a former cinema in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It closed in 1953. Today, part of the building is used for retail and office space.HistoryDuring World War I, Allentown, Pennsylvania was the home of a large Army training camp, Camp Crane, where thousands of recruits were indoctrinated into the military as ambulance drivers before being sent overseas to France. The Lyric Theater, located at 23 North 6th St was primarily a stage theater, however it was adapted to show silent films to entertain the troops that came into the city for recreation.Oliver "Ollie" Gernert, the treasurer of the Lyric, took note that when the Lyric showed a movie, it was packed with soldiers, but when it presented a play or Vaudeville show, many seats were empty. Gernert believed that a cinema-only theater would be extremely profitable, and if it owned by someone who worked for the Lyric, there would be no conflict of interest as the Lyric could continue to present stage shows.Named "The Strand", construction was financed by some local businessmen, including a local dentist, Dr. Benjamin Stuckert, who became Gernert's business partner. The cinema was erected during the summer of 1917, and it opened to a full auditorium on 8 October of that year. The first film shown in the theater was Betsy Ross, with Alice Brady, John Bowers and Lillian Cook.A headline in the local newspaper The Morning Call stated that "Strand, Beautiful Play-House, Open. It was noted that the Strand would be an exclusive modern full-time movie theater, like those in New York and Philadelphia". Unlike the Lyric, it would not present vaudeville stage shows or plays. It was reported that "... The interior decorations of the theater are everything that has been claimed for them... the lighting system is unique for a playhouse in this city, the screen is exceptionally large and the picture areas as clear as life." To accompany the silent films, the theater had a large organ with a full-time organist.

Fun small theater! Only has 2 films playing at a time. Tickets are only $5! So for me and 3 kids plus 2 large popcorn and 2 large drinks it was $29. It is small and quaint, seats do not have cup holders. Very old school, but the popcorn was tasty and the seats were comfortable. And for $5 a ticket will definitely return with the kids.
This theater has nostalgia in spades. $5 for adult tickets, $1 more for 3-D features... The popcorn, soda & snacks prices are refreshingly low too. However, the entire place could use a bit of a facelift but, of course, if they did that then the prices would certainly go up to compensate. The seats are a bit narrow... The sound system & screen in both the lower 250-seat theatre is certainly nice enough and the smaller 90-seat theater upstairs. The bathrooms are easily 70 years old: gigantic 4' high urinals, 1" square tile floors, the faucets in the men's room were separate for hot & cold water, and the one was missing a handle. They have the original silent projector from 1917 on display in the lobby from when the theater first opened. According to the signage, they are one of the oldest purpose-built theaters still in continuous usage. The theater is CASH ONLY.
Not bad, but not great. As a movie loving KU student, hearing we had a movie theater near our school was great news! The tickets being so cheap was a definite plus, and the elderly gentleman running the box office whom I will assume is the manager was kind and welcoming. The younger man running the lobby was quiet and uncommunicative, however, and the condition of the theater was overall poor. It needs some serious renovating.. the men's bathroom was missing the handle for the warm water, which meant I could only wash my hands with cold water.. the theater itself smelled funky, almost as if you could tell how old it was. The viewing experience was a good one, until a dog could be heard barking somewhere close to the theater, which was incredibly distracting.. yet, all the flaws being considered, you just can't beat the price. I'd go again ..but considering that it's the only theater that's even remotely close, I don't have many other choices.
Great old time movie theater. Has that old time feel that takes you back. Movie tickets are just 5 bucks. Awesome price to see a film with family and friends. They also have good snack prices compared to the large theaters that charge you an arm and leg.
Saw the first Sonic movie here in 2020 as the pandemic just hit and had a rip-snortin’ hurrah with my friends. When I arrived just in time to see the sequel today for the 4:20 showing, the door was locked. I confirmed via the website and phone number that there was indeed a showing at 4:20, and yet nobody came to unlock the door or answer the phone. I never find any pleasure in assuming the worst of anyone, but if the person in charge left early when there was still a showing that at least one paying customer would come to see, that is honestly unprofessional, especially for a small-town business that prides itself on affordability. I stood at the door as the movie was about to begin, and I am standing here over a half hour after the movie has started playing. This is honestly a disappointment and I hope that I have not wasted what could be my last chance at seeing the movie at this theater. I would love to have given a higher score, but this is completely ridiculous. EDIT: Moving down to one star. When who I assumed was the manager returned after I waited for 50 minutes or so, he claimed to have locked up and left a full five minutes after I had arrived at the door. I know that the time was 4:20 when I checked my phone upon arrival, so if he is the same person who I saw exiting the building and getting into his car by the front entrance as I was approaching from the next block over, then it wasn’t even a mistake—it was dishonesty. I hope that future showings won’t be canceled early so others don’t end up waiting around for nothing like I did.
I love the fact that this theater is very traditional and old-fashioned and the prices are just very affordable especially for college students. Even the popcorn is really cheap, so if you’re looking for something fun to do in the area that I definitely recommend going to the theater and hanging out with some friends. They do show movies that are currently in theaters so there’s no need to worry about that!
For under $20 I can get 2 tickets, 2 Large sodas and a large popcorn. You really can't beat that price so it's perfect for a date or taking the kids to a movie. Seats are uncomfortable though but it's supposed to be old fashioned so I guess that's why. I also wish they played trailers before movies.
A little throw back movie theater circa the 20s, and the price is right, $5 for all seats, even if it's a 3D movie! Two theaters, great picture and sound quality. They play first run movies and it's definitely the plane to take a family for a reasonable evening. Even the concessions are super reasonable, definately the most visited movie theater by my family.
Nice little home town type theater. Comfortable and easy access. Prices were excellent at $5.00 bucks a ticket for any show too!! Popcorn & soda was fresh and tasted good. Very nice experience overall. :
$5 tickets for some pretty big name movies! For only two theaters they have a pretty good selection of times. The seats are a little beat up, but its hard to complain when its less than half the price compared to most theaters
