Sugar Creek Covered Bridge

Description

Sugar Creek Covered Bridge is a covered bridge which crosses Sugar Creek southeast of Chatham, Illinois. The Burr truss bridge is long and wide. The bridge was constructed by Thomas Black; sources disagree on the date of construction, placing it at either 1827 or 1880. The State of Illinois acquired the bridge in 1963 and extensively renovated it two years later. The bridge closed to traffic in 1984 and is now part of a local park with a picnic area. It is one of only five historic covered bridges in Illinois and is the oldest of the remaining bridges. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 9, 1978.

Awesome old bridge! I bet thousands of people pass it by on the interstate never knowing it's even there. I'm sure the locals like that though
It was cute, as a route 66 attraction. There is a shelter with 2 picnic tables. We had our lunch there and the shade was nice on a 92* day.
Beautiful bridge over a pretty creek in a peaceful park-like setting. Just a short drive from the interstate. Definitely worth the stop if you're nearby.
I stopped at sunset. There were five deer grazing. It was beautiful.
This is a piece of beautiful history inside a lovely little park setting.
Beautiful covered bridge off one of the old loops of rt. 66. A wonderful stop!
Well maintained Illinois State historical site in a beautiful location. There is a small park and pavilion attached that is a city park. Parking is limited, but there is seldom a crowd. The location is not far from the Glenarm exit off of I-55. Do note there are no restrooms and no public restrooms in the nearest town Glenarm.
As I expected and the park is so nice as well as clean and the bridge was awesome.
Always good history in Covered Bridges. Has a gazebo and walking trails too.
We were there for a staff Halloween photo shoot session. Very nice for photos. Was perfect weather and natural lighting for what we needed.
