Located in Rockland, Hanover, and Hanson, the Sullivan Funeral Homes is one of the oldest family run funeral homes on the South Shore.
The Sullivan Funeral Homes is one of the oldest funeral homes on the South Shore that is still owned and operated by the original family. There has been a Sullivan to help you in your time of need since J. Emmett Sullivan founded the business in 1897. Emmett ran the business out of the drug store he operated on East Water Street in Rockland. In those days, wakes were held in the families homes.
In 1929, Emmett's son Albert joined the family business. Seeing the changes from wakes in the families home to more public places, Albert built one of the first homes in Massachusetts specifically for a funeral home.
In 1959, Albert and his wife Mary bought an old New England farm house in Hanover. Originally built in 1750 by Isacc Perry, the farm house was updated and renovated, but the center chimney, cooking hearth, and stone well still remain.
In 1963, Albert's oldest son, Albert E. Sullivan Jr. joined the family business. After a period of failing health, Albert Sr. retired and Albert Jr. assumed responsibility, and later ownership. In 1976 Albert Jr. and his wife Maryann expanded the family business even further by building a new funeral home in Hanson. In designing the new funeral home, they made sure it would be large enough to accommodate the growing population of the South Shore.
In 1989, Albert Jr.'s middle son, Robert joined the family business. With the growth of the South Shore, additions were added to Rockland Hanover to better accommodate the growing number of families that they now serve.
In 2012, Robert's oldest daughter, Amanda, started as a secretary and is now employed as the Office Manager.
In 2013, Robert's youngest daughter, Ashley, became a licensed apprentice and will be graduating from Mt. Ida College in May 2014, receiving her associates degree in funeral directing. Ashley will be a 5th generation funeral director.
