Sunnyside Cemetery

Description

Sunnyside Cemetery is a Long Beach historical landmark that was founded in 1906. Many prominent local families who played vital roles in the development of Long Beach and Southern California are buried here.

In 1994, the cemetery was embezzled by more than a half million dollars from the endowment fund. The state Department of Consumer Affairs took the property into conservatorship and a group of volunteers made arrangements to keep the cemetery open and continue burials.

This small group of volunteers, who have relatives buried at the cemetery, have kept it open for the past 23 years. Unfortunately, the small remaining endowment is not sustaining operations. A new effort is being launched to raise funds to keep the cemetery open to the public, and ongoing volunteer efforts are being scheduled and organized by community volunteers at Friends of Sunnyside Cemetery Long Beach. A GoFundMe page has also been set up for those who wish to contribute to the ongoing expenses at the cemetery.

Sunnyside is one of the few civil war cemeteries in California. The beautiful monuments, grave stones, and inscriptions tell a history about the people that built our city. Our first Fire Chief, Police Chief, the first policeman to die in the line of duty, and many other significant pioneers are buried at Sunnyside.

Extraordinary. One of two vintage cemeteries with gravestones and mausoleums dating as far back as the 1860s. Very peaceful. I visit it to read poetry to the dead. The same title of my book of poetry © 2002. Yet, unlike Municipal, right next door on the same plot of land, this cemetery is not open 24 hours. It's a beautiful place to relax and take a cat nap for a few hours during a hot Summer's midday and waking up to an ice cold whiskey lemonade. It has movie nighttime gatherings in the summer. Come with a picnic basket and call it a wonderful time burning the midnight oil, so to speak. Very leafy. Very quaint. Very peaceful. Also, for weirdo people who believe in dogmatic folklore and say they have seen hauntings of ghosts and spirits and poltergeists need to be in a padded room for the rest of their natural born lives. I simply find it so hilarious that people spook themselves, these are the same dingbats who also believe in Nosferatu and necromancers. I put money on it they dress up for Halloween and howl at the moon.
I passed through the place and I began to think about life.. saw people's gravestones that had 1920, 1892 as the time of death. I begin to think that one day, all those living now will die
I have no family here buried but I drive down willow and see such a beautiful historic landmark that the city of long beach needs to take better care of instead of letting the homeless run the streets, but that's all political reasons and I wont go there on that, but this place is such a piece of history that should not be forgotten!!!!!!!!! Never!!!!!!!!!
Went to this cemetery on July 30th 2012 ghost hunting and I had an experience there. All I saw was a black..shape is the best way I can explain it dart from one side of my view to the other. Very strange.
